I have heard 2 conflicting stories concerning Dreamcasts and backup games:
1) Dreamcasts made after Nov 2k(or whatever date) can't play the Backup games
2) The only dreamcasts that can't play backup games are the ones that were released in japan and all of the dreamcasts released in the US can play backup games.

If someone has a DC past Nov. 2000 that can play backup games, PLEASE let me know!
Thanks,
Mike

I bought a Dreamcast from Best Buy in May 2001 from Best Buy - over 100 "backups" later and not one problem. Of course, some require the boot disc to play, but that is the result of who ripped the game and the way they made the cd image.

Best Buy in May 2001 from Best Buy

Check the bottom tag. I bought a DC from Best Buy last month and it was manufactured in July 2000.

Just because you purchased it in May doesn't mean it was manufactured in May. My brothers friend bought one last month that was manufactured in 1999.

<< There is a mod chip to allow playing of the backup games. >>

No the MOD chip only allows you to play IMPORT games not backups :)

BTW I pick'd up a new dc before x-mas and I got a June 2000 one... works great :)

on a side note check out my dc collection
(I gotta take another pic as those are older but I got 2 dc's and more controllers, another binder, another keyboard)

My Dreamcast Stuff :)

im pretty positive that there are no dreamcasts that cannot play backups, i read somewhere that the dreamcasts that Sega made so they wouldn't play backups were a special pink edition only produced in Japan. I had the link before and i'll see if i can find it again. I have never met anyone with a dreamcast that cannot play cdr games.

Whoops, there must be an echo in here, hehe...

I just checked the date on mine - November 1964.

I'm thinking I don't even have time to play my DC anymore - any of you guys have an idea as to how much a DC with 2 controllers and 110 or so games would sell for??

How many of the games are "real" games? Iknow you can't sell it with all those games if you plan on getting rid of it on eBay - you'll have to sell it to a trusted friend (or maybe someone here... :)) I know that I can't sell my mod-chipped Playstation with about 90 games on eBay, even if about 25 of the games are "real", as in not CD-R discs.

If you're taking bids, I'll start it off. 50 bucks. :)

BTW, did you say 1964?

<< I just checked the date on mine - November 1964. >>

Why indeed you did. Must have been from the first production run. ;)

Hehe, just talking smack - it was from Oct 2000 and works fine.

I'm proud, and also somewhat ashamed, if that's possible, to own ZERO real games. Picked up a DC at Best Buy when the price dropped to $100 and haven't even played it a whole lot since then.

I know that I wouldn't get away with selling it on eBay - though Yahoo auctions seem to tolerate selling this sort of thing...

I would definitely consider selling it here in the for sale forum but everybody here is so gung-ho on hot deals and have the knowledge to probably get the games themselves that I might not get much money for it anyway....

I guess if enough interest comes up in this thread I will consider putting it up on the other forum.

With a name like billgates you may find some opposition to your selling of any merchandise... ;)

Hmm, anyone think the Dreamcast's value will begin to rise once they're out of stock?

I got one of the original ones of 99.

Mine plays backups/imports without a mod chip.
You just need a boot disc.

Tweakmm you want to be looking for an American Dreamcast made before October 2000. Those are the ones that can play backups. As for Japanese dreamcasts, I have no idea about those.
