ok Then 9600 Pro 128 ATI vs 9600 pro 256 Saphire?

Depends on which will end up being better. I can OC it but am not sure of the best results. Which would be best if I did? I do game and it would mostly be for that purpose. I had a 9700 All in Wonder but had driver issues. Not sure if it was the AIW or the 9700 ? I also heard that some of the 9700 Pros did have some bugs and maybe try a new one?

in this order, OCing or not:
1) try a new 9700
2) 9600pro 128MB, and if possible, make sure you are getting one w/ quality memory
3) just don't get the 9600pro 256MB unless you can find it for the same price as the 128MB version and dont plan on OCing

256MB is not really needed on a midrange card. It can never run fast enough at very high resolutions (1600x1200) with AA/AF cranked all the way up to use it anyway. 128MB is plenty. You?d be much better off to go for a 128MB 9600 pro --- 100mhz faster memory makes a difference and it will run games significantly faster than a 9600 256MB.

256MB 9600?s are clocked 325/200 with 5ns memory that doesn?t overclock worth nothing. Some may have 4ns memory.

256MB 9600pro?s are clocked 400/200 also with slow memory.

9600pro?s 128MB are clocked 400/300.

lol...i knew the memory on a 256MB card was slow, but i had no idea it was THAT slow😛

Would be interesting to see HL2 tested on 256MB boards vs 128... Especially considering HL2 is more so GPU dependent since memory bandwidth is ahead of its time.

The PowerColor 256MB 9600 pro ? ?EZ? ? (400/200) ...in this digilife came with ?xlixir -5ns memory. Yuk.

IN another review that xlixir 5ns memory overclocked to just 205Mhz ?. ? a 5mhz!!! ? overclock ? LOL.

I remember this same discussion in the 64/128mb days.

Everyone always says 128 was a waste. But now im glad I got a 128 mb card

however for the price difference at tthis point I might jus get a niver card.

why dont you link to the cards you are considering eh?

I know the same thing has happened before with the 64mb/128mb debate, but at this time, and at least for a while, 256mb should not be needed. If you look at benchmarks for newer games the 256mb of memory does next to nothing. And in games such as hl2, the main obstacle is gpu processing power. That tells you that cards are going to need faster gpus before they need more memory.

256mb is unnecesary currently, and you probably won't be future proofing yourself either by purchasing the 256 now. by the time 256mb of video ram will become a necessity, the 9600 will probably be too slow of a GPU anyway.

go with the 9600 PRO 128. This memory discussion will always occur when the next level of vid cards arrive. How much slower would a card like the 9700PRO/9800PRO be if it only had 64mb mem? They will not sell it like that because they need to justify the $400.00 of original price when launched. Anyway if the preformance diffrence is more than a couple of frames in Quake (298 compared to 304) I would be surprised. When 256mb really becomes a necessity like at least 64mb is now then the current crop of card will all be ancient.

If they're the same price, why not go for the 256MB card? Supposedly some games will make use of the extra RAM, like Call to Duty and STALKER. I think UT2K3 also had/has a 256MB mode. No doubt more and more future games will pack more and more textures, but 256MB will be fringe for a year or two yet.

But if the 256MB card is much more, just get the 128MB 9600 Pro. It seems to be an extremely well-balanced card for current and near-future 1024x768 gaming.
