ok. So you have a 939s and you want to go Dual-core... What would you go for?

I just got an X2 3800 Manchester as an upgrade from a Venice 3000+. It's running at 2750. Great CPU for the money.

I agree with this. But you also need to factor in if you have a 939 board you likely have DDR1 whereas AM2 you'd need DDR2. But RAM is dropping in price as well...

Thats the trouble though, if I want to buy AM2 then I need to look at a new motherboard AND new ram. And when I end up looking at those I think I may as well just spring the little extra and get the C2D since I'm forced to replace everything anyway. Only the s939 dual cores make much sense to me, otherwise you may as well go whole hog.

I was just in this position. After pricing out a decent AM2 setup, I decided to just buy an FX-60. It should last me more than long enough to ride out the AM2 phase and hopefully jump into quad-core with DDR3.

Really, DDR2 prices are what killed the upgrade for me. And, let's be honest, there's really no AM2 offering (currently) that makes the extra hundreds of dollars worth it, IMHO. I bought the FX-60 and 1TB of storage for less than it would cost to 'upgrade' to a slower AM2 setup.
