ok. So you have a 939s and you want to go Dual-core... What would you go for?

an X2 or and Opty?

tough choice. I know the Optys OC well, but I am not gonna OC them that hard... especially with the regular ram I have I want go too much about 240 I bet. So anyway... What do you think I should get while the prices are this low before 939s starts to get not supported by AMD and the prices go mad high like they did for the 462s.

So anyway. Basically. I just want to continue to game and muti-task and do that without much slow down and that is a huge reason for the upgrade.

Grab something ASAP, both X2's and Optys are running out fast everyplace and are starting to command top dollar

Just 4 weeks ago FX-60's were available for $259. If you have one now you could easily get $400 maybe more for it

I don't really want to go higher than $300 right now. Do you think the 180 is better than the 4600 and possible 4800? I might go for the 180. If the 180 is really better... I really would like it to give me everything I can get out of this board and leave my 939s with a great ending...

O and how much do you think I could sell my 3700+ Sandy that has a E4 stepping?

I would not spend no more than $100.
That being said, you can get the x2 3800+ for ~ $93 at the Egg

hell i might part out my x2 3800 rig and get a new rig based on a 3600 brisbane if this keeps up.

Your RAM won't limit an overclock, use a divider and you'll be golden.

I'm most likely going for an E6420. =P

My single-core Venice isn't cutting it in SupCom.

Hold up, I got a 3000+ venice, I'm trying to OC it, and I'm reading that 939 is dead after this stuff runs out. Getting a dual core, that I can overclock would be nice. 100 bucks on that AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800 sounds very tempting tbh.

A little of thread, yacoub, would you mind checking out my thread, click here for my thread ?

One of the things I'm worried about, is that with my asus a8n5x mobo, I won't be able to get a big OC out of a dual core either. Or perhaps its my ram. If I have to upgrade ram or mobo as well, I might as well wait with purchasing a new cpu for s939.

Thx in advance

I just upgraded my AMD64 3500+ with a X2 3800... For 93 bucks, you cannot go wrong. Also purchased one for my dads system. Should be pretty cool.... I heard these clock around ~2.6Ghz or so on air... Time to find out Friday!

It's stupid to spend $400 on a S939 chip when you could just get an AM2 motherboard an a chip for less than that.

If you must go 939, buy something used off the FS/FT board here.

I agree (and I'm in the same position...)

As has been mentioned, the RAM doesn't really affect the overclock for 939, just use a divider to keep it at or near stock speeds if it doesn't OC well. The CPU clock speed is most important with these systems anyway.

I agree with this. But you also need to factor in if you have a 939 board you likely have DDR1 whereas AM2 you'd need DDR2. But RAM is dropping in price as well...

thats the thing f4phantom, when i use a divider of 1:2 it doenst post, at anything above 250 fsb. If I use a 2:3 * max memclock at 266 * it posts at 270, which is what I am running it at now. According to cpu-z the ram is running at a frequency of 174. But, once again, if I use a max memclock of 333, 5:6 divider i think, then it once against does post above 250, only at 222fsb as far as I know.

The max multiplier is 9, so for me to reach 2.6ghz on a x2 3800 I'd need to get a 290fsb going. If my mobo doesn't do it, or my ram, then i'm once again stuck at 2.4ghz, with ram running below stock quite a bit, and it's ddr 400 of course, which isn't that quick to begin with :p

Why are you jumping directly to the 166/333 DDR divider, from the 100 Mhz/200 DDR divider? You didn't realize that the one in between those two, the 133 Mhz/266 DDR divider was a divider? Of course, that isn't the reason that you can't reach any higher of an overclock. Your cpu not receiving enough vcore is obviously your problem, since your RAM is running well below 200 Mhz.

Venices are like San Diego's, they don't clock very high on stock voltage. But, also like San Diego's, every bump in vcore will get you more speed, at least until you reach the chip's limit.

edit: And the multiplier on an X2 3800 is 10, not 9.;)

Not necessarily

They would need to reinstall all OS and Apps with a new MB, some peoples time is worth more to them and will opt for a 5 minute upgrade

But $400 is way to much to spend on an 939 X2, get an Opty 165 or $100 3800+ x2

myocardia, I got an OC stable at 270*9 now, vcore at 1.4. It simply won't go above 270, 273 works, but 275 doesnt. Simply doesn't post, and that when the vcore is raised to 1.55. I think my problem is not being able to raise the NB/SB voltages. Ram is at 2:3 btw, or 266 max memclock ...
