I walk into my dad's house and my little bro tells me the computer "just shut off" while he was playing the Sims 2. GReat.... I go and check it out, and the damn computer wont even start. By start I mean physically turn on, nevermind booting. I hit the power button and ... nothing.

So I thought the power supply burned out, but when I look at the motherboard, the little green LED is still lit. I flipped the switch on the PSU and the light went off. Flipped it on and the light came back on. So the motherboard is getting power, it just wont turn on. I've verified all the connections on the motherboard and everything seems good to go.

So what could cause the computer to just shut off randomly and not turn back on? Could the motherboard have gone bad? Could it still be the PSU? Unfortunately I dont have another computer at my dad's house to swap parts and test. I'm just looking ofr any ideas.

Specs:
P4 2.4B Northwood (stock)
1GB OCZ Value RAM
Abit IC7-G
Enermax 460w (brand new)
120GB WD Caviar 7200RPM
ATI Radeon 9700
CDRW

I think thats it.

This computer has not had any problems and was running smooth as butter for the past couple months. Oh, and my dad's taxes are on the HD, so I hope if the PSU did blow, it didnt take everything with it!

Try a different PSU anyway. That same thing has happened to relatives' computers before (motherboard LED lights up, but no power).

The green LED might be an indication of a specific voltage, but the PSU might not be putting out another required voltage. Definitely try another PSU. And of course check for loose cards, unseated RAM, loose power connections, etc...

remove one stick of ram, and try turning it on,
if nothing, put it back in, take the other out, try that one in.
PSU is always a possibility.
but this same thing happened to my friends PC.
Lastly, see if you can nab a new MOBO, cause that might be fried.

Check your mobo's caps and see if any have burst/leaked. That's my suggestion to add to everyone else's.
