OK im doing this to prove a point to a freind. If gamer (A) has a 7800gt that he just bought. Would it be more logical to .

A. pay 20 dollars and step up to 7900gt and save up for sli set up.

B. try to sell the 7800gt and buy a X1800xt , crossfire mobo and another x1800xt in the future.

C. Or keep the 7800gt and wait till next series comes out.

(note he plans to be able to run Unreal tournament 2007 smoothly on 1280x1024)

* The real question would be which of these set-ups will also last the longest? *

Its a trick question. By that I mean its really what your personal preference is. No wrong answer as long as you are happy with the choice. Myself I would choose A or C and then after that it would depend on what my future plans are and how much money I got. Currently the cheapest option is C. The next cheapest option is A. I dont consider B at all because I dont personally consider the 1800XT worth buying when there is better to be had but not everyone will agree with me on that. Your going to get alot of different answers on this one because everyone has different opinions based on preference, need, and money.

At 1280x1024 he should be fine with the 7800GT for now, and would be best off saving the cash for the next generation of cards.

After all, UT2007 isnt out yet, and no-one can really give an idea of what it'll need. Wait until your closer to the release date, and then consider updating.

Option A. It'll work out cheaper & be fine for 1280x1024. Resale value on 7800GT's isn't going to be that great so he'd have to spend more to get the X1800XT & mobo.

SLI 7900GT's should be the just the trick for UT07, maybe even 1 7900GT could play it smooth at 1280x1024 but we'll have to wait & see.

Define "while". :)

It would improve his FPS, but it will still only equate to the speed of a single card from the next generation (if the current speed trends continue as they have). Would it not be better to upgrade to the next generation card's when they appear 2 months down the line? After all the 7800GT is still a powerful card and capable of running games well at the moment. It just depends how much cash your friend has got, personally though, i dont see the point upgrading now, for a game that has yet to be released. I bought a 7800GT in November thinking it would be great for Oblivion, but when the game finally came out, even the X1900XTX's stuggle with full details.

D. None of the above. Step up to the 7900GT for $20 (7800GT will only net you $220ish here or on eBay). Sell the 7900GT for $300+ and then buy an X1800XT on the FS/FT forums for $275ish.

That's what I'd do.
