There is a huge differance between core duo and core 2 duo. Differant architectures. C2D is 4 IPC design, 64bit, macro ops fusion, SSE4, full 128bit SSE(previous chips had 128bit sse, but had to do it as 2 seperate 64bit operations, core 2 duo can do the same in a single operation).

Core duo is a 65nm dual core pentium-m with a couple of minor enhancements. Core duo is used in lots of differant laptops, not just apple/mac.

Like the name implies,

"Core 2" is the succesor to "Core"
Overhauled, refined, etc.

Duo/Solo refer to the number of cores.

Core Duo is based on the Yonah (Pentium M) architecture, Core 2 Duo is based on the Core architecture. Basically, the only thing about the architectures that isn't different is the brand name.

The best I have heard it explained is like this: Core (the architecture) 2 (the second in line, like pentium 1-2-3-4) and Duo (two cores).
