Ok, so I've got my Pentax *ist

episodic

I just got a tamaron 70-200mm lens to go with it. I want a quality 2x extender to use it for 400 mm shots. What can you all recommend? Yes, I know this is not optimal. I am going to use it for day bird shots though, so it should be fine.

Hooray for pentax users!!
But don't bother with an extender.. yuck, or even those consumer tele zooms..
If you want real bird shots, go look for a used 300mm F/4 prime off ebay for roughly $100-150.
Here's a shot I took with my Super-multi-coated Takumar 300mm F/4 I got off ebay for $105..

pic of the lens.. it's built like a friggen tank.. http://astroguy.org/300mm1.jpg
Easily sharper than one of those Canon 70-200 F/4L zoom lenses that canon users love to gloat about.. and for small fraction of the cost!!!

Anyways, the Pentax-F 1.7 extender is the best extender you can get. They'll probably cost you over $100 though.

IIRC, there's a unique thing about it that it'll convert manual focus lenses to autofocus!!!

How does it convert an MF lens to AF? 😕

Yeah that's pretty wild. It must do its own focusing based on leaving the lens's focusing ring in one position.

uhhh... perhaps the extender itself focuses...?

Well obviously, but you'd think that it would cost a little more if it was that great. It sounds like it's awesome.

A google search reveals that it's not that great. You have to get the focus pretty close manually, then AF it and sometimes it get it right.

Ok. I just got a *ist DL and I can't figure out how to get the flash to pop up. I'm pressing the little "up" button with the lightening bolt and the camera just ticks at me. I've tried it in different modes and different lighting conditions and the flash just NEVER pops up.
