Ok so its time for a new vid card, currently a gf3... what should I get?

I am thinking of getting one of the three following choices. 1. ATI Radeon 9600 Pro All In Wonder 2. ATI Radeon 9800 Pro All In Wonder 3. ATI Radeon 9800 XT
I have a few questions about the choices, and no I don't really want a GF FX because it takes up a pci slot with it... and I haven't been too impressed with their recent drivers. I was wondering if the All in wonder 9800 pro comes with the coupon for Half Life 2? As well if there is going to be any big big news next year in the video card market. Do many people here have the 9800 xt? It looks pretty good and I am sure that it will do quite well in hl2 and doom3. This will be used for pretty heavy gaming, though I might be building another system next year, so should I get the 9800 or not bother? Are there any places where it is cheaper in Canada? And what type of prices are there for the 9800 xt in the states? Would it be worth it to have it shipped here or would I get killed with taxes and other fees when it crosses the border?

EDIT: Or should I get a sapphire 9800 se? or is that just a waste of money, its $260 canadian. The 9600 all in wonder is $299, 9800 all in wonder is $510, and the 9800 xt is $650. All prices are Canadian.

ATI Radeon 9800 XT if you want the absolutely top of the line ATi and dont care much about spending big buck
9800 pro (AIW) if you want ALMOST top of the ATi. this is a really a better buy than the XT, as it performs SLIGHTLY slower but costs a LOT less
9600 PRO AIW if you want a more or less average performing gaming card

the XT goes for ~$450 here

Heard that best buy was having a sale on black friday 😉

do a google search to find the card and price (i can't post it here due to BB using dcma to come after AT)

Dont bother getting a New videocard now !!! Because when DOOM 3 & Half-Life 2 come out next year so will the Nvidia NV40 and ATI R420 Videocards and your 9800XT will be a pile of crap!! When compared too these monsters that are totally new Architectures and not simply just a new revision of the ATI 9700

People with NV40's and R420's will be playing Doom 3 and Half-life2 very nicely
.... .. if there?s a game out now that is unplayable on your Gforce3 that you must play with FSAA and AA at a high rez then I guess you are justifying your purchace but if not then waiting an extra few months will be worth it !!! you will be getting the best of the best with a bran spanking new Architecture. Not one that?s over 1 year old.

😉

ah..back to the OP's original question...Why do u need to upgrade now? a gf3 should run everything out now at decent resolution.

wait till a week b4 half life2 ships to buy your new video card

that all depends on what you consider decent 😛

but seriously, take a look at the 9700 Pro. i bought it for $330 the day it came out and its more than a year later and you can still get $230 for it. thus, if u snag a 9800 pro for $300 today (frys has this deal once in a while), you should have no problem getting $250 for it 4-5 months from now.

Dont wast your money wait for the games u want 2 run befor you get a new card .. it will be the best thing you ever do .. last thing you want is 2 be a sheep ! ATI are tricking us into getting cards for a game that isnt out yet!!!

I don't "need" to upgrade, I just want a better video card, and I am getting a new processor/mobo/ram, so I figured might as well get a new video card.

Your GF3 is a pretty solid card right now. And with the R4x0 cores and NV40 cores coming in Febuary, its probably better to save yourself some cash in the short term. My little bro's new computer will be a P4C 2.6Ghz with 512MB of RAM, paired with his current Radeon 9000 Pro.

Bite the bullet, and tough it out until ATI's next chip is released. HL2 and Doom3 will run MUCH better on those cards. But anyone who says they will not run on today's high end cards is just plain stupid. You may not be able to run at 1600x1200x32 w/ 4xAA and 8x AF, but you definitely will be able to run both games without a high on a 9800 Pro/XT.

Arrgh, I think I might wait it out, but I just ran 3dmark03 and my score was baaaaad 897, so definately time to upgrade something, is there still places that sell the 9500 pro?

So? How's it perform in the games you play though. That should be the true test of performance. *shrug*your money.

Get a Geforce FX5900 Non Ultra with 2.2ins ram 850Mhz there going for $199 thats around the same price as the ATI9600XT and its way faster then it and even faster then the 9700 Pro so in the end you will get a card thats better then the Geforce3 to go along with the rest of your system that you can upgrade to a better one and not feel like you have just blown all this money on a High end card just to replaced... it in 6 months time...... that gives you 6 months to play all the games you own with AA and FSAA and high rez .. ohh and you will get a 6000 Score in 3Dmark2003 with the Geforce FX5900non Ultra if numbers make you happy 🙂 .....Well thats what i get with my FX5900 and an Athlon XP 2500+ Clocked at 3200+

Some of them are getting a little choppy, and I can see that the framerates could be higher, and sometimes when I am playing a game for a long time it doesn't perform very well...

well... ATI Radeon 9800 XT is now the leader... since u already eliminate the only alternative--nvidia from your wish list... i mean.. there aint too much to pick from now~~
just becareful about spending... make sure you really need it before u buy it... cause this 9800 XT would prolly cost more than the cost of CPU~
how funny~~

If you want something to just pass the time until the next rev of cards just get a 9600pro from canada computers ($191CDN).. and you'll play everything fine until the HL2 Doom3 etc.

If you are going to be upgrading again in a few months don't bother getting an AIW cuz you will loose all the fancy extras when you upgrade.
why not just buy a seperate TV card so you won't have to worry about the AIW features when you upgrade
