any advice, tips, general stuff I should know before I go? My uncle is going to teach there for a month, so my 2 cousins and I are going to tag along with him.
Does anyone on here live there, or has anyone who has ever been there have any tips or know of any good places to see?

If you drive an Import, stop by the dealerships over there and see if you can find some cool accessories for your car ;)

Well damn. If I was over there, I think I would probably spend all of my money at their car dealerships just buying crap :D

Isn't Jackie Chan from Hong Kong? I watched a thing on the Travel Channel where he was showing the best places to visit in Hong Kong, and he said that if you do anything at all, ride the ferry from one side of the city to the ohter. It's not really a big city as everyone imagines, but he said that you HAVE to ride the ferry ;) http://travel.discovery.com/destinations/celebritytours/chan/chan.html

Will do, but I don't have a digital camera (yup, I'm still stuck in the stone age) so it will take a while.

edit: Oh, that reminds me, do most places that develop film offer the ability to put it on some sort of photo CD?

ok first off, f00d. there is this jumbo restaurant and it's on a ship. it's pretty cool, i went there when i was a kid.

Stanley would be a good place to go, some pretty neat tourist stuff. Tsim Sha Tsui (sp?) has places for shopping and stuff. There are a lot more places to go but i can't think of anything on top of my head

what do you want to see in particular

Sum Shui Po - Golden shopping center (pirate, computer, porn, etc.)
Also there is a open flea market, you have to check out.

Go to Mong Kok for car accessories or sportwears.

Crossway bay for good high class dining. You can find good places to eat everywhere,
make sure you try everything out.

At last, go play some Hong Kong style streetball, very fun LOL.

Becareful with the heat, it's really freaking hot in Hong Kong.

Yeah, I've seen pictures of that jumbo place on the net.

I'm not sure what I'm looking for, just anything interesting. I've been looking through the travel guides and there are definately alot of things to see. I'm going to be there a month though, so I have time to actually go see stuff. I'm just looking for neat things to see, stuff to be aware of, etc. I think there are several ATOTers who either live there or visit there often.

Also, is there anything going on in August? I know they have the hungry ghost festival, but I'm not really sure what that is.

hong kong is really hot this time of the year & streets will be FILLED with people.

the ferries are pretty cool. peak tram, tram (hong kong island), ocean park if you wanna see some marine life stuff & rollercoaster. cultural stuff hmm, there is this big buddha statue in lantau island and i can't think of others at the moment.

when you get to hong kong, you *must* have your fortune told.......have them read your palms, look at your face, all those stuff. and tell them your date of birth, birth time, etc etc....it is very neat.

Get me some airsoft guns.

This should be the official "Send an ATOT member to HK to get stuff for us thread"

Depends what you want, I guess. We just came through a typhoon this morning, so hopefully you won't get stuck in one either.

Pirated CDs and DVDs are getting harder and harder to buy here because they do raids everyday.

There are plenty of places to see... the ferry is good to take at night just to see all the lights.

I have my meals and travel money taken care of, and I'm staying in some apartment on Hong Kong Island for free. Should $500 be enough to cover everything else (shopping, souveneirs, museums, etc.) for a 3 week period? I'm not going to buy stuff like clothes, and I will probably only buy a few little things to take to people (and no car stuff/dvd's/electronics).

US$500? If you don't need to pay for meals, it's probably enough.

If you DO decide to buy electronics (it's very easy to suddenly go wild, as a lot of the things here are not available in the US), it won't be enough.

I'm 99.9999% positive I'm not going to be buying any sort of electronics or media. I'm more worried about all of the cost of museums, palm readers :p, and basically anything else I have to pay for that is not considered food, transportation, or places to stay.
