OK, so I SCREWED my New DVD Burner!

Hi All,

As I was installing my new DVD burner the other day, I was screwing it into the case, and I guess I was trying to muscle it too much, the head of the screw broke off, and now the entire screw it in the hole, but I can't get it out!

Any suggestions on how to remove this half screw?

pliers and a steady hand.

drill the screw out with a drill bit slightly smaller than the actual screw.

try to take off the external covering of the DVD drive and screw it in from the inside (so you're screwing it outwards, actually) with needlenose pliers.

plenty of ideas - use your head.

Leave it, and use the other three holes. And don't turn the screws so hard. 🙂 It's not like your PC is going over Niagra Falls...is it?

you can use one of the dentist tools with a fine point. put in it so it catches and slowley turn it out

Take the cover off the drive and remove the screw.
Took the cover off a CD drive last week to fix it (they tray had been knocked) and it worked fine, there isn't really any danger. (IMO)

Like Jeff7 said I would just leave it in there. I think you could do more damamge trying to get the thing out versus just leaving it in there. The other 3 holes are plenty sufficient to support the drive.

Wouldn't happen to be one of the Pacific Digital drives from the OM deal this past weekend would it?

Same thing happend to me. 😕

I've put in, and taken out HD's, FD's, and optical drives probably 1000 times and NEVER had this happen. Until this weekend.

But what can you expect from a $65 dual format 8x DVD Burner.

it was one of the Pacific Digital OM drives. I've installed hundreds of drives and this has never happened before. Perhaps these drives has slightly smaller screw holes??

Put a SINGLE drop of glue on the screw, just so it doesn't work loose. I would use wood glue. Other types of glue will release chemical fogs, so to speak. It could collect on the laser, and that would be bad. Stick to regular wood glue, just 1 drop. Elmers would work as well.
