I keep wanting an Ipod - but what keeps me away is the requirement to install quicktime. Quicktime hijacks all of my media DESPITE what mime settings I deselect.

Being quite good with computers - I never (other than uninstalling) really figured out how quicktime managed to keep it's hooks into everything after being installed.

So in short, I really hate quicktime.

I notice there are some 'alternatives' like ephpod - will these work fine?

BTW why is the dang thing 200$? I'm thinking about $100 :p

I've got an old edition of vmmware that works on xp - I was even thinking - could I setup Itunes and Quicktime in a vmmware install of xp and run Itunes from that, never touching my main os?

you dont have to install QT
you don't even have to install itunes

go to apple's site and find the ipod updater thing
then use the winamp ipod plugin

There are plenty of mp3 players out there, no reason to buy into the ipod fad.

Ephpod is a good standalone freeware ipod manager, there are also plugins for winamp, foobar, and probably WMP too which allow you to do it. That being said, there are technically superior players out there. Be honest with yourself; if you're buying it as a status symbol, to impress people, etc. - then yes, get the ipod. If you're buying it to listen to music on the go, then get a better player. Nothing wrong with wanting a status symbol btw, we all do. For some it's an ipod, for some a nice namebrand watch, many simply lust over sports cars. The reason to own each is the same though.

What other mp3 player is out there that's 30gb, is so small and plays videos for $300? Oh yeah, NONE.

I don't really understand this *status symbol* crap though because practically everybody has one therefore you wouldn't be "envied". It's mostly hype if not completely hype and thats what apple does best. The iPod nano and other iPods are undoubtably nice but it just lacks so many features I'd like in a device that small, which is why I absolutely love my cellphone. I just found out recently that I can stream XM Satellite Radio to my phone, which is making me itch more and more for XM satellite radio. I like XM but ATM it's not worth it just yet but finding out I can stream it to my phone makes it worth eleventy billion times more.

The only thing I dislike about the ipod is that you can't delete songs from a playlist using the Ipod, you have to use a computer to do it. You also can't delete songs period using the Ipod, it has to be connected to computer and you have to use a program to delete the song.
