I post some of those later.

thats awesome, what are the specs on the machine? And if you get the chance, could you get some pics of the contraption you made for the hard drive, it sounds interesting.

yeah, that's fscking AWESOME! How much did those set you back? Do you think it'd be better to have the hard drive mounted like:
____
......
......
......
......
......
___

and then have some sort of suspension for up/down so that the platters wouldn't be slapped with any vertical bumps, but to have the shocks for safety?
<--pondering this very topic, but the idea of RC shocks is very cool! Great idea :D

I was thinking the same thing an personally I would mount the HD vertically like you suggest. Shock absorbsion would still be necessary of course.

BTW wyvrn, nice job and what part of Texas are you in? I would like to see how this jewel works.

i had a similar thing in my truck consisting of my old laptop yet i have a standard cab tacoma and with the 2 10s behind the bench seat my only option was to hide the lap under the seat with passengers and well living in central florida it gets quite hot here so i just yanked the whole thing i gotta figure something else out maybe set up a shuttle system in the tool box :)

Hey dude, puts pics up. I would love to see your design. When I get my webspace back up, I am going to dedicate a page to this idea. If you want, I can host pics of your setup also :)

Not sure I understand. The shocks absorb potholes and road humps. I have several road humps on my street, so I had to implement something to reduce the up/down movement while driving over one.

The way I understand hdd construction, the head is mounted above the platters so a hard up/down movement is undesirable. I didn't think vertical movements would then be strong enough to cause the platters to strike the side of the hdd casing. I pondered using foam or something to mount the hard drive, but that would not prevent head crash in the event of a 1) nasty hole or bump or 2) series of nasty holes or bumps. I got these shocks for free, a friend of mine used to be big in rc cars in high school. Normally, I think 4 these quality would cost you $55 or so.

Cool :)

I have had a computer in my car for just under 2 years! ;) Used to be a K6-233, with a very old, slow, 4gb drive!

It's now moved up to a Duron 850, 40gb 7200rpm Maxtor drive, and is built into my sub enclosure :) I am getting a touchscreen lcd soon, hopefully i can find out how to wire it up ;) At the moment though, i'm using my iPAQ, along with RemoteAmp to control it :) Running WinXP as it boots nice and quickly :)

Going to add a USB WiFi adapter, DVD drive (probably FW or USB) and GPS to it soon, after i get a couple more month's paycheck! ;)

It's just in a stock '92 Ford Escort, but hopefully in a year or two, i'll be getting a Mitsubishi Galant, and it will be moved in to there (and by that time, i'll probably have a P5 system in there running it! ;))

I really like your idea for suspending the hard drive!!! :D I just have mine mounted vertically | in a removable drive tray...been OK for the past 2 months i've had the drive! Though if/when I redo it (when get new car), i will probably do the same!! :)

Is vibration a problem for the computer being mounted in a sub box? I think that's a sweet idea. I am toying with building a custom now. Also, since you have your hdd mounted vertically, does it ever skip?

I've not had any problems with it being in the sub box :) No skipping either :)

Only thing I have had problems with was the PCI network card vibrating in the PCI slot, and it pausing, but that was eliminated when I upgraded to a motherboard with onboard lan :)

If my camera wants to work tonight, i'll take some pics of it :)

I just got a laptop and was thinking of rigging it in a way so I can just plug it in my car whenever I want and taking it out whatever I want. That shouldn't be too hard. It would be pretty nice; now I need a nicer car ;)

thats a pretty nice setup
but do you have the tower standing like that when u drive??
it doesnt tip over??
or do you have it screwed in somehow??

and what do you do about the heat
it gets pretty hot in the trunk??

On Saturday, I went round my town test driving cars...and it was really hot, was hitting 30C outside (that's hot for the UK). The inside of my car was boiling, but putting my head in the boot (trunk) wasn't as hot, compared to the rest of the car, it was like putting my head in a bucket of ice! ;)

So I haven't had any worries about it, it didn't get too hot in there for me! :)

Got it from e-tronics.com . It is a pyle brand. They are not the nicest quality, but they give good bang for buck. I paid $99 for mine and didn't have to make any modifications. You can get nicer ones cheaper, but you have to do soldering and/or build a case to cover the pcb board.

I do keep it mounted upright like that. I use heavy duty velcro on the bottom to keep it from sliding sideways. It is wedged up against the back seat and I use 2 bungee cords to keep it from falling backward when I accelerate. So far it is working smoothly. If you design a system around a bookpc type of case; then because it is shorter, you would only need the velcro to keep it from sliding around.

As far as heat, so far I haven't had any problems. The trunk is cooler than outside, but without air conditioning it is still hotter than the cabin. I am about to install two slot fans and an 80mm case fan( I get these locally for ~$2 each). That would make two 80mm and 1 60mm fans intaking, and one 80mm (PS) with 2 slot fans outputting. I hope that is enough. I have an indoor/outdoor thermometer that I am thinking of putting in the case to see what kind of temps I am running. It's an Athlon processor, so I imagine pretty hot.

Sweet, pics are good. The reason I didn't mount it vertical because I was afraid of skipping if the head bounced up and down a lot. And a couple of people who did this reported losing their hard drive they thought because of shock.
