I just bought a 2003 RSX-S

It has the BOSE system with woofer (AKA woofless)

I bought the car for the engine and transmission, I guess the sound system would be so-so... soooo, here are my options

1) Have a sub+amp installed... this would fix a lot

2) go ahead and buy a nice head unit + replace all the speakers. Can tweeters be fed off a head unit? or would I need a separate amp? btw, going this route I would eventually buy a nice woofer for the car.

and no, I'm not going to rice anything...

if I remember right the BOSE sound systems (atleast for the maxima's at one time) have the amp on the speakers itselt.. unless bose changed that i dont know what to say. You can talk to a dedicated audio place or the hifi audio forums (forgot the addy) they should be able to help.

replaceing the HU is easy, its the speakers that can be a bitch.

1) Probably the best place to start

2) Yes, anything can be run from the HU (Including subs, but they wont really do anything).

I'd focus on where you think it sounds the worst. In my case, I had the Premium sound system so my mids and highs were pretty good. Low end bass was non existant, so thats where I started. Bought my sub + amp, got it in. Next comes midbass, now that I have bass I realize just how badly I dont have midbass.

you have an rsx too?

I was curious...if I do go for a woofer only right now, I was going to use a 2 channel amp with a 10 inch woofer and box. I dont need anything earth shaking, but full would be nice... that sound ok?

You can run components off your head unit using in line passive crossovers. I would recommend an isobaric setup, small space required, usually just over one cubic foot for a pair of 10's. You will want two subs for true stereo sound. Most boxes have crossovers installed so you can just hook up an amp directly there. I would recommend JL Audio subs and if you choose to replace the components go with MB Quart, you will pay for them but they are the best in mobile audio. good luck, another expensive hobby just like comps, except youre going for maximum volume with no distortion instead of cpu speed. Its not that it sounds Bad, its just that its weak...

It's a tough decision... just need some more thump with the music. I'm not shooting for the ultimate, around here that just screams "please steal me", lol.

its a tough decision either way. I can see the tweeters being a real pain in the ass to replace.

if you are going to replace the HU try Eclipse, best competition quality by far along with JL Audio for the subs and MB Quart for your components. They even have fiber optic systems....😛

?!
WTF...........
Ok dude....If you say so......

Email crutchfield. I have a bose setup in my 00 maxima and I emailed them because I'd heard problems with swapping out bose parts because of how silly the system is setup but the advisor who emailed me back said that in my particular system there is no problem simply swapping out my front speakers and leaving the existing amp in place.

You could see what they say about options for your car. An amp and sub would definitely help a lot. Bose is overpriced I know but I have to be honest my stereo in the maxima is very nice relatively speaking. If it was able to crank more base and I had the right crossovers to the rest of the speakers (2 tweeters and 4 mains) so that they aren't stressed on bass then it would sound even better. The sub it has now is ok but it would be nice to have a more powerful one.

It's too bad you couldn't get the same car without bose, then you wouldn't have wasted the money they built into the price on it 🙁

tell me about it...

I actually decided to save some cash and go all the way. My friend thinks I should keep everything bone stock and that it sounds "fine", but I also think he's a freak, lol.

I picked a nice Kenwood MP3 HU... I just have to pick the speakers and I'm ready to go... the quartz speakers are really nice, but a little pricey...not to mention you can only find them in high end audio shops that back you bend over when you have their service.

Skoorb, the Bose Acura setup is quite inferior to the Maxima...no question about that. I don't feel too bad though, I did get a great deal on the car. 🙂
the only redeeming feature is the in-dash cd changer.

You mean the difference between components and coax's? Components give you seperate speakers. You get a tweeter, and you get a midbass. Coax's are a all in one thing. You get one big frame, with a midbass and the tweeter mounted on top of it. I prefer components by and far to coax's, although coax's are generally easier to install.
