i have a newcastle 2800+ and an epox 8KDA3J and 512x2 kingmax pc3200. as I understand it, all i have to do to OC to 2GHz is raise the HTT to 222 from 200 (222*9=1998MHz). do i have to mess with the memory or anything? im using stock cooling. how hard will this be to get done? would it be safe to just go into the BIOS and just change it from 200 to 222? or would i break something? i've never overclocked before.

I have the sam proc and I have oced it to slightly above 3200+ speeds. Your memory looks like a generic one so you will want to change the divider. Since I dont have the same mobo I cannot tell you where the option is. Basically you will have to drop your memory speed from 200 to something like 183 or 166 and ramp up the HTT until you pass Prime95 for 12 hours at least and your temps dont go above 55 degrees.

Also, you will have to change the HTT multiplier to 4x from 5x. Other than that, you will most likely be fine. However, just to make sure, run Prime95 torture test for 8+ hours at the settings you plan on having it at.

Why would he have to increase the multiplier on HTT?

I also have a 2800+ and have found little luck in overclocking it. Read Zebo's suggestions to no avail.

To keep his ram below 200mhz, because it's a generic brand and likely won't overclock well.

thanks for replies for a noob. im not sure where to change the divider if i need to. my goal is 2200MHz which would be a 245 FSB. i dunno if my memory could handle that. where in the BIOS do i change the divider? i also dunno how to set memory speed separate from cpu speed, all i found was a place to change cpu speed, not memory.

On a lot of boards you set a memory divider, and a 'fsb' (on A64, the fsb isn't really 'real'). You don't choose the memory speed independently.

So you choose your 'fsb' (245) and a 5:4 divider, and that gives a memory speed of 196 (392mhz ddr).

any idea how set a divider with an epox 8kda3j?

ok what im reall asking is where exactly in the BIOS is the setting for memory dividers? also, what divider should i use to keep the fsb at around 212mhz but the memory at around 200mhz? my computer crashes once in a while when the memory is at 212. sorry im stupid

You would need a 5:4 divider for that. Assuming your BIOS has controls for the divider, they should be on the screen with either your memory timing control, or your cpu frequency control.

Ok I just looked in the manual from here http://www.epox.nl/manuals/mu-8KDA3J&%2B%20V20%20(PCB%20V2.x).pdf

Page 37 , advanced chipset features, Dram configuration (press ENTER) .

Max Memclock (Mhz)
This item sets the memory clock. By placing an artificial memory clock limit on the
system, memory is prevented from running faster than this frequency. Example,
?200? will set to DDR400 speed.
Options: Auto, 100, 133, 166.

oh it works now. performace is almost the same. i got to 2ghz but i guess overclocking is only worth if your going to be hardcore
