You are travelling to the North Pole by sled, but your huskies are too enthusiastic and you overshoot the Pole slighty. Will east be to your left or right?
 
If you look at your compass, east would be on your left, which was on your right before your passed the northpole
 
It actually depends on which meridian you were travelling up, because as I'm sure you were already aware :disgust:, compasses point to the magnetic poll, which is south of the geographic pole.
