Really, is it *THAT* difficult for a person with an IQ above 60 to take the pretty purple cable, and plug it into the hole with the pretty purple square around it? How about the big black cable with three holes that just might look like it will fit into the hole in the back of the computer that just happens to have three big prongs in it???

Arg.

Background story -

I work in an office(meaning building, not individual room) with limited space. I just got 6 new PC's that have to be prepped and have software loaded on them and deployed out to users at the beginning of next week. I don't have enough network jacks in my office to do the builds here, so I take them out to a spare office that is used maybe 5 times a month. To do this, I unhook the PC that is in the office and user the kb/mouse/monitor/ect that are already there.

Yesterday I was building a machine there, finished up, unhooked the new build, and forgot to hook back up the old machine. Last night happened to be the one night this week that somebody was going to use(not that I new this before hand) that station.

I got a nasty gram emailed to me about how careless I was for not having the computer working.

It's taking every ounce of my energy not reply back that your average 4 year old who can distinguish between colors and shapes could hook the machine up in a matter of seconds and be up and working.

But I didn't, and thus, I come here to rant, snivel, and whine.

I've had a user who repeatedly plugged his network cable into his ISDN card. First time it took me a while to figure it out, until I asked him if it said anything on the card he had plugged the cable in, and he told me it read 'ISDN'. The second time I presumed he'd know if he had made the same mistake again, so I asked first and when he said he had done it right spend an hour and a half troubleshooting the rest before letting him read it aloud again, and put stickers on the cards. Third time I started with letting him read it aloud, then told him to also write it down somewhere. *sigh*

Some people have their whole knowledge and interest focussed on other stuff, and will not pick up anything outside it. And some are plain stupid :)

No funky cables, no funky ports. Just 5 cords, all color coded, and only two of them able to be switched around.

Keyboard(purple)
Mouse(green)
Monitor(blue)
Network(not really colored, but can only fit in one port)
Power(black, and can only fit in one hole)

my favorite story is of an engineer who called my co-worker frantically saying his monitor wasnt turning on. She went over to look at it and realized why it wasnt "turning on." He never hit the power button on the PC to turn it on, so the monitor was in standby

Remember Fausto's Golden Rule:

People are stupid.

Keep that in mind always and your life will be much easier (or at least more predictable). ;)

i've got another one!

One of the women at work was in a meeting being questioned as to why she did not fill out some paperwork(an excel document).

Her repsonse: Ever since lightning hit <her managers name"'s computer at home, things havent been working properly here. I think it is because of the shortcuts.

*Everyone in the room went totally silent and just stared at her*

One of the consequences of people's hidden self hate is a lack of self trust and self reliance. It's the last place they expect to find capacity. We usually have something somewhere we feel reasonably competent at and inflate that one thing into a world of self glory instead. It's partly why the TV is filled with so called experts. We don't know anything so lets find out from the pros. In other areas where we really are absolutly clueless but think we know, you can't tell us anything. Once you get used to this and realize you are just the same in some variation, maybe girls or sewing or arranging flowers, you can start to relax and begin to see that in this nut case world, there isn't really much to do but try in some small way to shine a light and help people to feel a little better. When you see that the person who couldn't put five cables in is trying to blame you for how bad he or she feel, because they are trying to avoid becomming conscious of that feeling themselves, it helps to deflect the natural tendency to avoid the same feeling yourself over being accused of being responsible because you left the cables off. We are all insane. Love is the antidote.

half the people at my company dont understand that a program is installed unless there is a shortcut on the desktop. If there is no shortcut, they complain that i haven't installed that program.

It's Moonbeam. What did you expect? :p

The single most annoying thing for me, a PC technician, is when people use computer words in conversation when they don't know what they mean. The shortcut example is about average. I've heard worse. :|

I agree, the person should have been able to do it if they tried... BUT, it was your responsibility to have that machine back running...

Moonie, a simple "We were both lazy", would have sufficed. :p

Things like this just sort of chafe my hide simply because taking the initative and learning new things that I'm not familiar, and/or comfortable with is a requirement for my job.

I've got to learn how to install and manage an exchange server in two weeks time, or learn the AS/400 operating system in a month, and somebody not having the courage/confidence/initiative/whatever to plug in 5 color coded cables is aggrivating to me.

They came in at 7:30 at night. I was working on a bogey on a 5 par on hole number 5 at that time.

It may not be because I have heard so much worse.

true. I hate when people call their computer a harddrive. I also hate it when people talk about how they want more memory. O...K... Are you talking about RAM, or your harddrive. Considering memory is a valid word for both (in the "end user" world). Or I hate it when people refer to their CPU as memory. What does memory have to do with a CPU??? I'll upgrade your whole computer for you and I just need to ask one question, How much do you want to spend? Less than $300, Less than $600, or greater? I will figure everything else out myself, you will recieve a faster computer and a bill. None of this, I want more memory! junk. If you can't figure out how to plug everything in, I charge $10 per minute to plug cables in (and I might need 2 or 3 beers during this time). Min charge of $100. I also hate when people plug their phone line into the RJ-45 jack. What kind of idiot thinks, "Well, the plug is a bit big, but I'll cram it in there anyway"?

I'm just ranting :D

I remember when my dad, my uncle and my cousin were talking about the Microsoft breakup. They sounded so ridiculously stupid; I just stood there laughing to myself.
