ok

Problem: my second computer (in sig) has a daft problem. every other boot up (say all the odd number boot ups) the sound will not boot (audigy card) and the network card ( a D-link job) wont boot either. so im left in windows with no sound and no LAN

however, this computer also has a thermal take thermo electric cooling system. you may know the one im on about. it has a huge chunky controller/power PCI card and the whole thing has to be plugged into the mains to work. the pci connection on this is mainly solid plastic but there are a few traces on it. it has a blue status light, when it flashes somethings up. this light flashing also coincides with the sound and netowrk not working too

now the PSU in this thing is a Q-Tec 400watt psu. now the computer had been running fine with a 9700pro in it, my friend sold me this computer and ive put my 9500Pro in it. and its giving me this problem.

i was cleaning the rig today, and i read the spec on the PSU. its rated for on the 12v rail 16A Peak, 12A max

is that too low for this?

P4 2.4Ghz, 768Mb PC800 RDRAM, Gigabyte P4 Titan mobo intel 850i chipset. a single WD 80Gig drive. 2 CD drives, 80mm and 120mm case fan, a 9500Pro, and a small exhaust fan in a pci bracket

thermo electric cooling is externally powered.

in short

sound, and network fail to work EVER OTHER BOOT UP
the externally powered thermal take thermo electric cooling also says it has a problem when the LED either flashes or goes out. this happens every other boot up at the same time as the other two.

Your PSU is a cheap piece of junk... Sorry to be so blunt. ;)

My Seasonic Super Tornado is a 300W unit, and it puts out a continuous 18A on its 12V rail. 12A max for a "400W" unit is pathetic.

Without the TEC, your cheap PSU should be able to handle the system... But put in that TEC (which is VERY power hungry), it is obvious why you are having problems.

Your options: Either get rid of the TEC, or get a better PSU.

HTH!

Yeah, like he said, your PSU's amperage on the 12V rail is quite low.

Nowadays, it's better to get PSUs with a total of at least 25Amps on the 12V rail(s).

the TEC is externally powered though...the pci card has a power conector...smaller 3 pin kettle type connector and it plugs in the mains. so that cant be using any juice from the psu can it?

I suspect the PSU as well. I had a generic 400w and it gave me simliar problems, it couldn't handle a 3.06ghz P4 with a geforce 3, and eventualy killed my motherboard, replaced it with a 350w enermax, and that thing was able to handle my 2.8 prescott @3.5ghz, with a 6800GT and dual raptors..replace that generic PSU

ok well not really got alot of money to be spending like, but ive found this for £23.50 (inc VAT) from a reputable store i always buy from (jus bought a razer exact mat, payed lowest shipping it came next day:D)

Enermax EG365AX-VE(G)(FMA) 350 watt PSU

single 12v rail provides 26A, basically its the poor mans Noistaker. hasnt got the swish paint job. smae fan setup as noisetakers basically, manual controlled fan speed, and braided main cable

looks like a good buy to me, jus have to wait for when its in stock (1-3 days they say)
