If I was to buy these and upgrade my 9800 GTX+ video card later would I be good for a while?

ooouch. Whatever you do, do not get the gulftown.

i7 970 - $594.99

i5 2500K - $224.99

Benchmark

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/157?vs=288

Save over 50% on something better... (over $250 lol)

Then, get this mobo - $134.99 + $7.56

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-476-_-Product

Saves around $70

THEN, get this RAM - $84.99

(If you don't do heavy production work in After Effects you wont need 12GB for a Long... LONG time...)

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-311-_-Product

Then, with the ~$350 you save, you can get this BEAST of a video card - $324.99

Bam, all your problems, solved!

How do you plan to use your PC - what applications and games, and game settings and monitor resolution

The i7-900 series has the advantage of faster memory - with the triple channel. This does not help gaming too much but does benefit other applications like video editng and CAD. So whether or not this series is the best for you, depends on your uses.

If you stick with this series, you could save a bundle too by getting a little slower processor - the i7-950 saves almost $300 over the 970 - but it is also quad core vs. the six-core 970. Here is a comparison of the two:

Sandybridge has alot more headroom for overclocking and runs way cooler + you get an extra 250$ cash-back when you buy the 2500K vs the i7 970: how about that! even more if you buy it from MicroCenter

Benchmarks? I do professional video work and I've not noticed a difference between the two really.

Its a theoretical difference. AFAIK nothing will use the extra bandwidth triple channel provides (yet).

Are you mad? Listen to David. What was wrong with the build that I posted in your other thread? It will be faster than this one and the whole rig costs about as much as this CPU.
