Ok screening a call

Someone is talking about this and i have no clue what they are talking about. Can someone tell me what it means to screen a call?

Like lookinn at yer caller ID or letting your answering machine pick up in case its someone you dont want to talk to.

girlfriend was talking about it and i was curious what it was. Friend of ours got into trouble with cops
