Ok...quick question on if RAM will make a difference....

Hi guys,

I have a 1.3 gig AMD processor with 266 BUS...but my motherboard is a Abit KTV that seems to have a max BUS of 100...I think. Anyhow...since I'll get a new motherboard and upgrade that a later time since its a big hassle, I was wondering if getting 3 chunks of Kingston 256 RAM will make a big difference in speed from my 384 RAM I have now. I wanna take adavantage of the ridiculous RAM prices right now.

Also..for you ABIT owners out there..am I correct on saying my KT7 (not KT7A) has a bus max of 100?...or is there a way in the softbios to set it a little higher to pump some more juice out of it? Thanks alot guys...I'm not a techie per say and could use some help.

I'm not sure about the bois settings, but i can tell you this:
1. Depending on what OS you are running, you may have probs with that much ram. Win98/me can only handle up to 512 meg of ram. after that it seems to caue problems.
2. Adding that much ram prob won't "speed up" your system like you want to.

I would invest in a new MB and take advantage of that 133FSB on that Tbird. I personally have the IWill KK266-R and it is great. It rezembles teh Abit board alot but seem to overclock much better. It has setting for 100mhz chips and 133mhz chips as well.

I would spent the money on a new mobo if I were you. I don't think additional RAM is going to help any.

On your question about ram to am using 384mb and I thought it was enough but I was using my friends and he uses 1024mb of ram and I could see a difference between the two. We have everything else the same mobo, AMD cpu. The only dif is the ram he does a lot of CAD and he says he needs more. So yes you can see a dif in more ram but I'm not sure what programs you will run that will need it.

ah...ok well I'm using win2k so I think the OS can handle the RAM overload. I'm trying to get as much juice as I can because I run 3D studio Max and consistent rendering gets a little annoying. I guess I'll fetch for a new mobo, thanks guys.
