I'm a neophyte when it comes to this photography stuff so I don't need the end-all-be-all, just a nice solid well performing SLR for a good $$

I wouldn't include the 300D in my considerations. There are too many benefits to the 350D, instant on being my favorite.

I would consider the Nikon D50 and the Canon Rebel XT (350D) only.
