OK, people... Shutting down my P3 for the last time, installing my ASUS A7V133 - What do I need to do?

I'd rather not re-install Windows right now, I know there's a way to delete a section of the registry to make it possible to swap motherboards without killing Windows. How is that done? Should I do it now, when the P3 is still running, or should I wait until I have the Athlon in & do it in safe mode? Or is it even worth bothering with?

Anything to watch for?

I've never done this before, so any help would be appreciated...

You will run into problems... It would be best to format and re-install...

format
install via drivers reboot
install drivers for your other devices, rebooting everytime. Make sure they are the latest drivers.

OK, so if I re-format I'll need:

Via 4-in-1 drivers (ASUS CD has v4.24
Promise Ultra 100 IDE Driver
USB Patch for Athlon

I'm downloading the latest VIA & Ultra100 drivers now, I'm assuming the "USB Patch" is fine off the CD?

your talking about the enum key in the registry

I am with you man, one main reason I am not to keen on upgrading/switiching platfors is that I dont want to kill my drive data (have it right were I want it now)

good luck with the swap

bozack...

That's exactly what I'm talking about. Which one is it, the one in HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG or the one in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE? All I do is delete the key & restart, right?

I am backing up my stuff just in case I do have to re-format, but if I can avoid it I'd rather not have to do it.

Oh, and ForeverSilky... As much as I'd love to donate it to you, I've already sold it all. The package goes out tomorrow morning.

:p

Your current P3 system is just plain BX right?

If it's some other chipset that had patches applied, etc check for those first in add/remove programs, uninstall them.

It doesn't matter when you do it, like you said, you can do in the current state, and then shutdown and do the swap or you can do the swap and boot to safe mode and remove the registry branch.

Delete the Enum branch in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

When you restart, ignore any prompts about display mode, drivers, etc...

Goto start, settings, control panel, add new hardware.

Allow it to redetect everything.
Restart.

Check device manager for duplicate devices.

Remove the duplicates that do NOT have an exclamation mark.
(ignoring things that there should be many of, i.e. irq steering, or usb controllers, etc)

Restart again, nothing should have an exclamation mark that is identified.

Load your drivers as you'd like :)

This'll leave most of your software needing to be re-installed, but at least you'll keep your data:

1) re-start your system
2) F8 into DOS
3) type this at prompt "deltree C:\Windows" (or whatever drive/directory Windows is installed in
4) wait for awhile(30+ minutes usually)
5) re-install Windows

This will eliminate all potential problems, unless of course you try and install drivers for your previous chipset.
