I keep seeing post after post with links to guitarists who do nothing for me. I've played guitar since I got my first electric guitar on my 12th birthday, 20 years ago. I'm not saying I'm great by any means (although I am pretty good), but I've been a guitar enthusiast for 20 years, and have heard a fair share of guitarists and know something about technique.
No one impresses me more than my hero Paul Gilbert. What do I like so much about Paul's playing? Well, in one word, speed. His playing is so natural and clean. His ability to play super fast, and effortlessly, and so clean. And by clean, I mean the notes don't run together, or have incedental notes in there, like you'll hear from alot of players. I was first turned onto Paul ion 1988 when my musician friends in my hometown of Vincennes, IN showed me this new band from LA called Racer X. Racer X had two guitarists, Paul Gilbert, and a local Vincennes musician Bruce Bouillet. Bruce was about 6 or 7 years older than me, and moved to LA before I move to Vincennes, but many of my friends knew him and heard him play. He used to teach guitar locally before moving to LA.
Racer X was a band of techincal superheroes. If you ever get a chance, listen to some of their stuff ("Scarified" being my favorite). The singer was the weakest link, but each musician was phenominal. The drummer now drums for Judas Priest. Paul left Racer X to form Mr. Big, who wrote radio-friendly ballads and never showcased Paul's abilities (despite having Billy Sheehan on bass).
So here are a few of Paul's videos I found on YouTube: (mostly lessons...might not seem too cool for non-guitarists, but might show you all that's involved in fast guitar playing)
WOW
OMG
Forgive the cheerleaders
Scarified!
With his solo band, in stupid astronaut outfits, but still shows his talents. The Racer X version is better, with Paul & Bruce doing harmonies at 200mph!
For the acoustic fans
Some of the responses to his videos on YouTube:
"THIS... GUY... IS... OF... THE... HOOK !!!!1!1!1!1!
Paul Gilbert is one of the best, it's all a matter of preference, so I say: Paul Gilbert is the best on guitar of all time. "
"We've always regarded him as note-perfect, check his solos and general playing in mr. big; love his neo-classical type stuff. Sorta dont want to touch your guitar afterwards "
"This is sex! Where was he before. How come I haven't heard of this guitar genious?"
