I was recently offered a job at a companythat does subcontracting work for the government, they want me to get security clearance (I don't know why but this isn't the problem), my problem was the the salary.

here's what I do and what I make atm

Computer Support Tech for an elementary school $13.19 / hr @ 35 hrs/week paying for insurance, but everything else paid, i.e retirement.

part time hardware technician for a small computer shop, about $10.00 an hour for 20hrs/week ( i just got the job and am in the 90 day period).

my backround
I went to a school out here called Microskills to get my MCSE 2000, (not certified yet still need to finish up 2 more classes and take the test), and I have practical experience with computers troubleshooting/repairing and maintaining them (like probably everyone here I have built my own PC from scratch :) ) as well as basic networking skills i.e. configuring simple routers and fixing data drops, configuring static ips and terminating cat-5e cables. The basics most of you already have down pat.

The job I was offered was for a help desk/tech support position with the government on a one year contract (what part i don't know yet, most likely military tho.)

They tested my knowledge of win2k, winxp, active directory and microsoft office suites, network troubleshooting, and apparently i did pretty well (hence why they offered)

so my dilemma is this. they offered $15.00 per hour, but that didn't make financial sense to me as it was about a dollar less over a forty hour per week pay period. Thus Ii didn't sign the agreement offer they had put in front of me. They want me to come back to them with a counter offer, and I want to ask for $20.00 an hour, would this be asking too much?

I'm adding in the value of having to pay for my own insurance thru them, as well as gas and mileage, and cost of living here, since my other jobs are not too far from where i work, and they both are about a mile away from each other.

i'm stuck because, the part time job i have is real important to me ( i want to open my own computer repair business) but i can't help but think that if i do accept the job offer at a higher pay rate (good for me and my family) i will also get myself into a higher pay scale i.e better standard of living.

I have talked to my Wife, Father and Stepmother, and they all agree witht eh fact I should ask for $20.00 an hour and if they don't budge then let it go.

I'm afraid that if I decide to work for this company and they left me go at the end of the contract, i'm out of a job with a wife and kid to feed. Yet should i really be satisfied with only making $13.19/hr ?

any thought would be great.

and pls don't troll this thread, this is a serious question and would appreciate serious answers.

$20/hr should be reasonable. they might try to negotiate a little lower to $18, so be prepared to accept that. but they may very well accept your initial offer.

Definite dilemma... the subcontract job will probably look better on the resume than your current work, which may help balance out the anemic paycheck.

$15/hr isn't very much. Especially for the government. We have Deployment people that just image new computers and deliver them to people and transfer their data over and they make at least $15. I'd try to get mor elike $17-$18 to start and then be sure to ask how the review/raise process works. Also find out of it could go permanent or if it's strictly one year and then you're out of a job...

in talking with them yesterday, there is a possibilty of a permanent job, also if the contract runs out, they could place me somewhere else. But, those are very big ifs and that is what makes me uncomfortable. Otherwise, I would have jumped on it earlier.

You may want to look into the security clearance as well. As I understand it, security clearance can be very expensive (and difficult) to obtain on your own.

ok, so far so good, I accepted a counter offer of $17.00/hour, and they will get the security clearance for me. I'm pretty stoked about this, but still concerned about the possibilty of not having a job at the end of the contract.

meh, decisions decisions

The security clearance is worth its weight in gold.

Depending on the level: S, TS it'll definately be a selling point to any future government work. A lot of gov't type of job listings now require a clearance before even applying.

$17.00/hr isn't so bad to get your foot in the door and get a clearance while you're at it.

When I got out of the Army with a top secret in 2002 I got a help desk job starting at about $22/hr. After 6 months I got moved to sys admin. By the time I finished the job a few months ago I was at $38/hr.

Once you have the clearance you have more opportunities.

I was one of the first people to get in on the contract. When the contract suddenly expanded I became the "resident expert" with seniority and knowledge of our network/hardware/customer requirements. The best thing is that my wife was with me on the contract so we were both making the same money. :D

The real "lucky" part of it is that we were overseas (i.e. tax free!) in a location that we didn't need to worry about getting shot, blown up, or kidnapped.

update

Welp, i asked for $20/hr and they countered with $17.50 plus they will pay for the background check and fingerprinting. I pay for insurance here at my current work anyway so that becomes null. I'm stoked, but at the same time worried about what happens at the end of the contract.

err meant to say tehy will pay for security clearance, sorry about that.
