It is a desktop indexing thing, that goes off every 15mins to re-index everything and lags the hell out of me, can't figure out how to disable it, help anyone?

services.msc

You want to stop and disable "Indexing"

You might also want to do the same to themes. This is another major memory hog.
You can also get rid of Wireless Zero Config too. Even if you have a WiFi network don't let Windows screw it up. Configure it your self.

I have no idea why that service is enabled by default.
Its only useful to about 1% of windows users.
I think that's true about 90% of the services.
Well, what do you have?
On my gaming machine thats NOT connected to the internet, I have 14 processes running at any one time. Its XP Pro with SP2. One of them is the Razer app.

On my internet machine I have 22 running, but several of them are from Norton AV 2005.

(EDIT: For reference, my work computer uses Win2000 and has about 77 going at once, with only 256MB of RAM. I have yet to figure out what our IT department is thinking.)
