OK, so I've got the double-whammy.

#1.) Mother-in-law is having no-joy trying to get video from her Canon S20 IS (ya, neat camera) to a DVD. I had an old copy of DVD Santa 6 and it appeared to work just fine, but stick the DVD in a player & uhhhhhhh.......Black-screen.

WTF do people use to get Canon digicam video onto a DVD??? (Yes, googling results in circle-jerk)

#2.) Sister has an HD video camera that uses SD cards. She really wants to keep the video in HD format and when you Google this crap.......well, ya. Just ya.

Looks like typical format is either buy an external HD & hope something comes along down the road (cuz they don't make set top BR or HD burners right now) or buy a blue-ray burner for the computer and make do.

???

TIA

1) I haven't really done much with this so I can't recommend a specific program, but since you already have DVD Santa, I would start here: click me

2) Use the software that came with the camera since it should be specifically designed (or at least capable) to handle the video from the camera. You can probably use the same software to convert the video from the S20 to DVD if DVD Santa doesn't work. You don't really need to use an HD or blu-ray disc to store the video from an "HD" camera since you won't need that much space to store the short home videos from the camera.

Actually, hadn't thought much about the camera's own software for *both* of these devices. Will have to see if those help.

In the meantime, situation #1 is itchin' my brain. I vaguely remember something about Canon's AVI files not being standard AVI files. I think they might need to be converted to a "traditional" AVI file before something like DVD Santa will properly convert it. (Sounds weird but having flashbacks about something like this in my early Canon digicam days)

Only problem I have with that is why DVD Santa wouldn't recognize it as a problem file before just pretending to convert it.

(Did double-check the DVD Santa link but computer in question is fairly recent build w/ definite current DX9 and Klite pack)

(shrug)
