and on top of that... Mel apologized through his publicist. How about doing it yourself bucko?

You seem to have this thing against Mel Gibson.

I'm going to guess that Mel is in rehab and therefore not exactly available to walk out and call a press conference to offer his apologies.

As far as not recounting exactly what he originally said in his initial apology, why would anyone ever do that? You don't need to repeat the offending words in order to aplogize for them... and he never denied having made them.

Oh for pete's sake... you really think if that TMZ story hadn't broken Mel would ever have admitted to the comments?

not denying != admitting

LOL.

Ok... I expect you to apologize publicly right now for anything negative or derogatory you've ever said about single person (your parents, your s/o, your boss, etc) or group of people. Please include aplogies for things you said while drunk, upset, sleepy, or otherwise mentally impaired.

Or have you never said anything that was grossly unfair or untrue about anyone?

The man was not drunk, that's barely even a buzz and I'm about the same size as him.

This is only the second thread I have seen on the subject on ATOT (although I don't read every god damn thread like some of you people). I haven't seen it in any newspapers or on the television.

Frankly, it IS pretty big news, since a lot of people suspected it anyway.

You want to know something really spooky, ATOTers? If people didn't care about this, the media wouldn't be reporting on it. That's the bottom line. Consumers drive sales, and if consumers don't care about a story then sales are going to go down, so the stories have to matter to consumers.

It may not matter to you and I, but most of America does care about it

Actually he never said that he hates jews. Which could be another point to your argument that the media blasts everything out of proportion.

I'm thinking this is true for Gibson and his only exposure to them has been through the Film Industry which has an inordinate amount of Jews who are in charge. I'm thinking he has a problem with them, especially after the crap he went through to get his Jesus Movie made and distributed, and not those like Doboji or Presence. His comments were stupid but I think he's not really an anti semite, just a drunken fool .

I accept that as possible but not likely considering his father's background... I do see where you're coming from though.

But either way... he does deserve the negative press...

Well to much negativity over this might have a negative backlash for the Jewish Community. Keep in mind Americans love their celebrities especially when they've been humbled. If the Jewish community keeps on harping about this Americans will see them as vindictives and petty. It's best that they accept his mea culpa and just let it go. If they keep kicking him while he's down it's them who'll end up looking like the bad guys not him.

I see the validity of this too... but let's take a moment to look at how this whole situation unveiled itself.

The incident occured and was pretty much immediately made known, in DETAIL throughTMZ.

Gibson issues an apology, but seemingly deliberately leaves out any direct reference to his anti-semetic slurs...

Then when finally it is proved conclusively that the TMZ information was truthfull... then and only then did Gibson come forward with his true apology.

Doesnt look to me like the actions of a man who is truly sorry... looks to me like the actions of a man who hoped he'd get away with it.

The bad press may indeed earn the Jewish community a backlash... but in my mind thats just symptomatic of a larger problem... a problem I'd prefer to confront now, rather than play nice and pay the penalty later.

This is what Red is talking about. People talk sh!t about the Polish all the time, too -- yet they don't demand someone acquiesce to every one of their demands when caught. Push this too far and there will be a backlash. In fact, who gives a sh!t about the Polish? :p

If he had said that he hates black people the situation would be 5x worse, which is sad

This has been the case since Tom Brokaw went off the air.

News isn't news anymore but now it is media hype. Basically whatever will get the most viewers is news worthy. What is sad is CNN and C-Span followed suit in the late 90s. :(

That's exactly right. News is whatever America wants it to be. Who are you going to blame, the media or the viewers equally responsible?

No, actually, I'd disagree. Anyone under the age of 65 with two brain cells has pretty much stopped using TV as a primary news source. Now all that is left watching are old people and alcoholics and trailer parks. I think the content mirrors what they want and not society as a whole.

I know this is going to sound like nit-picking words, but here goes.

I wish people would realize that "semitic" means of the blood of Shem, one of the three sons of Noah. While being jewish by blood requires one to be a semite, they are not the same; there are LOTS of semites who are not jews. In a purely religious context, semitic would include nearly the entire middle east, comprised of muslims, jews, orthodox christians and more.

Thus, the term "anti-semitic" is a complete misnomer; Mel Gibson may very well hate jews, but I doubt he hates semites as a whole.

*yes, I do know that modern lingo has perverted the meaning of semite to universally mean jew. That doesn't make it accurute or correct though.

Who care if he said it or not. He is entitled to an opinion whether it is right or not. His comments aren't anymore ignorant and racist than the comments that come out of Jesse Jackson's mouth every other day.
