I found a hot pixel on my 5DMkII right near the center of my screen. It is very noticeable.

When I looked at my receipt, I found out I purchased it on 12-08-08. I don't think I received it until much later though IIRC.

Tech support said not to worry and just send it in for repair.

I'm crossing my fingers right now.

I don't think they're going to charge you because pixel-mapping is very easy to do. In fact, if you know the secret combition that enables you to enter DM, you can do it all by yourself.

Beside it, I've heard Canon service center is not uptight at all; they'd clean the sensor and correct the AF moudle free of charge even if you don't request it.

they probably will. I sent in my XSi because the flash stopped working, but I didnt mention anything about the small cluster of hot pixels I had on my sensor. They fixed that as well

That is great and reassuring to hear. One of my friends is a pro photographer and he swears every time he needs to send his cameras back for repair, they come back even better than they were originally.

I have been having massive dust problems with my 5DMkII. Even more than my 20D and I rarely change lenses. I hope they fix the flash problem I have with my 430EXII. Sometimes the computer goes nuts and puts the flash at full blast even when it doesn't need to completely overexposing the shot.

I like your name Cattykit!

BTW, what exactly is pixel mapping? Does that fix the problem or do they just disable the bad pixels?

http://www.olympusamerica.com/crm/oneoffpages/ask_oly/crm_e_ask_oly_03_09.asp

"When a digital camera is manufactured, one of the quality control steps is Pixel Mapping. In this process the sensor is checked for dead or stuck pixels. When such pixels are found, a radial interpolation explores the pixels around the dead or stuck pixel, maps their locations, and inserts data enabling the camera to mimic what the dead or stuck pixel should be doing."

I have to give Canon props.

I sent in the camera last week. I got it yesterday express mail right before Christmas and I didn't ask for them to expedite the repair. The turn around time was about 7 days.

I haven't checked out to see if it work but I'm sure it does.

Things like this is why I love Canon and will continue to buy them and hate Sony whose customer support is the worst!

This isn't the first time I heard about Canon doing something like this.

I believe Nikon is similar. Will clean and fix stuff without charge etc.

Thank god I have never had to use their service though.

I have yet to personally have anyone (including myself with Canon) complain about customer service and warranty work with either Canon or Nikon.

They really stand behind their digital cameras and in canon's case their printers (I do buy higher end though in the printer market).

I wish my A650IS wasn't stolen...I don't know which way to go now. My wife lost her SD450 and the SD780 I picked up for her is like night and day over the old one....so much better in everything.

Ugh...I found at least 19 hot pixels after taking some long exposure night time shots. I wonder if Canon will repair this again.

What's a good way of testing for dead / hot pixels? I just got my 7D and I'll be ordering a 5D II soon.

I am glad I bought a Canon digital camera knowing they are the best for service. So far I have owned two different Canon digital camera but they haven't caused any problem.

I know for dust than you take a picture of a white sheet of paper at F22 or so long exposure and that will tell you if you have dust on the sensor

Dumb and dumber...

To buy camera from manufacturer that's good for service, while 2 previous cameras of the same manufacturer had no problems...

What about? to buy camera for one simple reason - to take photos?

It would be difficult to take pictures with a refrigerator.

refrigerator doesn't have dead pixels and you didn't buy camera to take pictures...people, who buy 7D wouldn't ask stupid questions you did...

Buy something you're familiar with and to look "cool" before your even dumber buddies so, you don't have to ask stupid question about cameras ....

I have no idea what your problem is, but it stop now. Attacking members in a technical forum is unacceptable.
