a nice laptop, or a nice desktop w/ lcd screen?

most likely, i am going to be leaving my current computer at home for my brother, and my use, if i ever come home (6.5 hour drive w/ me not having a car could be difficult)

but what would you reccomend? i dont believe purdue has any plans on going wireless in a few years, but i may be wrong. although i would like to takes notes on a computer, it can be difficult to get some diagrams in there so i doubt it will be useful. i will be going there for computer technology, with some hopes to transfer to either computer engineering, or ee.

any input? this wont be purchased till next summer, but just wondering which u suggest. also the desktop might have a sff case so as to not take up that much room.

get a tablet pc if you want to be able to draw diagrams... that's my suggestion

if you're living close to campus i don't think you really need a desktop more than something portable since your school will probably have computer labs for you (esp if you're CE)

Big monitor that you can see from all angles so everyone can sit around it to watch movies.

People with laptops never have people over to watch movies with.

Writing notes in a paper notebook is the best way to go.

Cant really make graphs and charts on the fly in MS Word too easily.

If you plan on actually using the computer in class, a laptop. Otherwise, a desktop. Even in the Comp. Sci. program here, not more than maybe 5 or 10% of people actually use a laptop to take notes in class, so you probably don't need a laptop.

Oh, and most of our school has wireless internet access, if you wont have that, all the more reason to get a desktop.

id have to talk to minendo about purdues plans, but i dont believe wireless is for a while.

a tablet would be nice, but not really all that functional for everything. i like keyboards, and i can type pretty fast without looking at the keys (i say this as i begin to suck at typing) and my handwriting is sloppy, but taking down functions, and equations on a keyboard would be very weird.

Tablet pcs can just about only be used for one thing- "Drawing"

After being at a university w/complete wireless coverage, A laptop is your best bet. It is nice to know ur d/l off of usenet, kazaa, and ftp @the same time while your in Bio class. But then again, it's awesome to rock out on a desktop w/ Logitech z680's turned all the way up. You'll be the king of the dorm if that is where you are staying. So go for the best of both worlds and take ur current comp, and buy a lappy.

I suggest a desktop. Like notfred said, there aren't that many people here either that use laptops. For me, I like to upgrade my computer easily and I have no need to carry it around with me. I use notebooks for notes.

Get a desktop. You can always take notes and draw diagrams by hand.

Too many laptops get stolen and since you'll be carrying it everywhere with you, it has a high chance of malfunctioning prematurely.

well seeing as half of them come with keyboards, i don't see why they would be any *less* useful than a normal laptop.
