Can someone explain the ending to me? Marky Mark saves the day. He hops in the little spaceship. He travels back through space and time... and winds up on Earth.

What the hell happened to Washington, DC? I'm confused. How does an ape who lived in the future get a statue in the past? What a crappy movie!

You know that playing with time travel leads to unrepairable damage to the time continuum, don't you? So no wonder the past changed a bit.

Presumably he went back into the cloud which took him to a different reality. I didn't like the movie that much but thought it was worth it because of the ending. If you read the book, you will find that it ends the same way (except that he returns to Paris and finds it inhabited by apes).

Explaining the ending of Planet of the Apes is like explaining the ending of AI.. (So.. 2000 years after global warming raised the sea levels enough to flood New York, there's inexplicably some "freeze" that extinguished the human race?)

Even the best filmmakers often just don't get it.

The ending was done for two reasons:
1) a sequel
2) to have moviegoers think of something other than how much better Heston and McDowell were as they walk away from the theater.

The oringal was great.

It had problems too.
In the movies all the cats and dogs died off and that is why apes became domestic
But in the TV Series there are dogs????

Apes have airplanes and such in the Cartoon series.
How could that be?

I can tell you. There were too many different writers for all of the Planet of the Apes.

Actually, the original didn't have problems, everything after the original did.
