Ok i've been out of the loop since the 7800 came out...

7800GTX SLI is the fastest thing out there.
Seems R520 is not going to be out for another couple of months.

The end.

Not quite...

No AGP models of the 7800GTX or GT are planned as of yet. Bad juju.

ATI seems to be incapable of designing new cores that work.

i wouldnt say incapable, just slow

my impression is that they want to avoid another paper launch, and get it right...it's looking like the r520 will be a serious card 😉

Yet they should have 2 cores that work by the end of the year.

From news reports, ATI already has R520 cards running at 600 MHz with no problems, but are concerned about low yield problems. So there's actually nothing wrong with the cores. They're simply trying to get more good cores per wafer to increase profits.

As far as the 7800GTX goes, it's been quite a feather in Nvidia's cap to be able to put out not only the fastest available card, but to deliver them in large quantities. The current price puts some people off, but that's always the way its been if you want the fastest card available.

If they are getting poor yields there is something wrong with the core.
Hence the stories about a retape.

FYI, dug, it looks like the 7800GTX beats a pair of sli'd 6800 Ultras by a fair margin. That was the 'big' news, IMO.
