OK. It's time to dump this VIA POS (4-in-1 rant)

joohang

Lifer
I have a Gigabyte 7ZX, which was the only VIA board that worked well for me.

Well.. not any more.

This computer was working just fine and me being the dumb @$$, decided to install the friggin' 4-in-1 drivers in fear of any problems that *may* arise.

Well.. my Matrox display got all fscked up now. I tried to uninstall the 4-in-1 crap but it apparently only uninstalled one component of the two I installed. WTF?

I like the Gigabyte board by itself, but this 4-in-1 sh*t pisses me off every time I deal with it.

If I have to reinstall Windows 2000 because of this, I'm dumping this POS and getting another ECS K7S5A. God, I love that board.

Please tell me what you mean by graphics being all f*cked up.

I had problems with my graphics aswell after I installed the latest VIA4in1 drivers (4.33).

My icon colours sometimes F*ck up and my 3DMark2000/1 scores are very low on my GF2 Pro.

When AA is on my grphics goes noticably blurry - it never did this before under the same conditions...

:disgust:

Matrox G450 DualHead. Latest WHQL drivers.

Wonderful video card. Excellent drivers.

I install the latest 4-in-1 (v 4.33) from VIA's official website. BAM! I either get a random gibberish at Windows 2000 bootup (everything is fine until just before the login screen) or :|:|:| I get a BSOD!!! The only Windows 2000 BSOD's I experienced with my machines were caused by some Via problems (usually their sh*t @$$ drivers).

I can now only boot to Safe Mode. Great...

My motherboard has a 686A southbridge, not the 686B. I'm awfully pissed for having to deal with this sh*t at 4am in the morning. I'll give one more shot at getting my video to work properly again. If I have to reinstall Windows, I'm going over to NCIX.com across the street and grabbing their $98 special on ECS K7S5A. Maybe I'll sell the Gigabyte for $30 if anybody is willing to take this POS.

I guess I`ve been lucky with all my Via 4 in 1 drivers from 4.24 to 4.33 with no problems,my Via board has been great even with Win98 🙂,joohang try removing Matrox drivers use standard VGA then reboot and try reinstalling them, that`s all I can think off without the reformat or reinstall of OS.

It would suck if you have to remove the via and do fresh install everytime a driver comes out.. but hey...

About matrox drivers.. it's not just the VIA.. I think this time VIA plays a small part..

I use the CUSL2, BX6R2, i840s with Matrox G400/450/550 series

Fresh install with all necessary intel INF drivers updates..

Certain WHQL locks or gets out of memory error, etc.. and thats in W98SE / W2K SP2.. for reason unknown certain of their revision just totally F-uped.. so it might not be your VIA drivers...

I test matrox drivers with 3dmarks 2000, since it still runs okay, everytime a new version comes out and it is sometimes very flaky even with fresh install...

I do a clean install of my OS onto a freshly formated HD, then as soon as windows reaches my desktop, I reboot & create an IMAGE with Norton Ghost B4 I intall ANY drivers, so a clean install with drivers, 4 in 1s or whatetever isnt so painful.
(just restore the image & try whatever divers you like with a clean OS)

And it never hurts to IMAGE the drive b4 trying new drivers either.

Personally, I havent tried the new VIAs as my 4.32s have been working flawlessly.

Maybe Ill try them out tonite & see what the results are.

I too have the VIA 686B south bridge (AMD 761 north bridge though 🙂) and running the VIA 4in1 4.32 drivers and everything works flawlessly. I bought my Abit because I wanted as little VIA as I could get (but I wanted the AMD chipset). 🙂

OK. When I get back home, I'm going to try going back to VGA driver and see if that works.

If not, I'll just reinstall Windows 2000 and make a ghost image IMMEDIATELY. I was actually thinking about ghosting right after installing the drivers. BAAAAAAAAAD IDEA.

And I ain't touchin' those 4-in-1 sh*t ever again. The board works fine without it.

I went to NCIX.com to get some RJ45 cables and was VERRRRRY close to tell the sales person to give me a ECS K7S5A they have on special sale. The only reason I'm sticking with the Gigabyte is because the board saved me pretty well since I got it (until today) and I want 3 DIMM slots.
