Welcome back to the States. If you lived anywhere near here I would buy you a beer for your service.

Best thing to do imo is just go to one of those bars that has an insane beer selection and try different things out. That's really the most fun way to learn, even if you get a few duds now and then. Blue Moon is a wheat beer I think, so if you don't like that you may want to stay away from those. Then again, it may just be the added flavoring you don't like.

I just did a quick rundown, but all the info is available on the "beer styles" link I gave you.

Originally posted by: TallBill
Altbier <-brown ale
American Pale Ale <- lightly hopped, low abv
American Double IPA <- big malt & hop flavor, mid to high abv
Barleywine <-syrupy, mild hops, big fruit & hop resin flavors, high abv
Belgian Beers
Belgian Tripels <- candy sweetness, yeasty fruit, spicy, mid-high abv
Bock Beer <-robust, extra malty lager. Light bitterness, mid abv
Cask Ales<- any style of live beer; continuously fermenting. Naturally carbonated. No preservatives. Goes bad in days. Delicious
Ciders <-fermented apple juice
German Pilsner <- clean, balanced, traditional beer
Golden, Blonde & Kölsch Ales <- light, delicate, yeasty, hintingly fruity
Gueuze <-extra sour blend of lambic beers
Hefeweizen <-german wheat beer; dry, fruity, & yeasty
Ice Beers <- water is frozen off to create a more concentrated beer
India Pale Ale (IPA) <- mid to high bitterness, mid-high abv, questionable balance
Light Beers <-second runnings, lighter examples of traditional beers
Malt Liquor <- paper bag beer
Mexican Beers
Oatmeal Stouts <-smooth texture/body. Light/med robust flavors & bitterness, low to mid abv
Oktoberfest Beers <- Marzen; malty, low bitterness, low to mid abv
Pilsner <- similar, but different, see German Pilsner for an idea.
Porter<- toasted, malty, low to high bitterness, coffee, weak to strong body low to high abv
Sahti <- no experience
Schwarzbier <- the ultimate nullifier. A black beer that is light bodied, but full of taste. low to mild bitterness, low abv
Smoked Beers <- any range of beers that are smoked. mild to intense renditions. Not many examples out there.
Stouts <- heavier, drier cousin of porter. More burnt/nutty flavors. low to high bitterness & abv.
Wheat Beer <-see hefe
Witbier <- belgian spiced wheat beer

That's the list I was looking for. Perhaps if I buy 2-3 of each kind I'll have a better grasp. Over time of course!

You literally live right next door to me.

I live at Eola and Butterfield

I brew my own beer and, unfortunately, could talk for hours about beer. Let me know if you have any questions about anything

Sam's at Butterfied and 355 is a great resoursce, but there's a secret source! Down 88 is Woodman's

They have an amazing selection at Costco prices... both are about equidistant from you... I would say the Sam's probably has a mor extensive European selection, but Woodman's has a lot of great American microbrews.

An amercian trend is to higly hop beers, the character of hop being bitterness when boiled a long time, and citrusy, fruity flavors and aromas when added at the end of the boil.. Some American microbrews will have this character... If I knew what you liked particularly I could make some reccomendations... From your post I can suggest you try the russian imperial stout style.. Yeti from Great divide is fantastic for the price, and Old rasputin are must try's.

You say you're going to school... I'm currently finishing up my bachelor's after a long time off (I'm 32) C.O.D.s Adult Fast Track
program is fantastic, and fast and I trasferred directly to Elmhurst Colleges program, which is also quite fast.

Just a thought.

Some reccomendations, all available at Sam's:

American Pale Ale - sierra nevada
American Double IPA - Three floyd's Dreadnaught
Barleywine - Rogue's Old Crustacean
Belgian Beers - Chimay Red
Belgian Tripels - Chimay White
Ciders - Homebrew, or get past it... it's back-sweetened in mass production, I don't consider it a real product...
Hefeweizen - I don't like wheat beers, since you don't like Blue moon, you might not either...
Ice Beers - Don't like them either...
Oatmeal Stouts - Rogue Shakespeare Stout

Lemme add a couple of beers/categories to that list

American IPA - Stone IPA.
Belgian Quadrupel/Strong Dark Ale - St. Bernardus Abt 12
Geuze- Cantillion. Be warned, most people hate this style. It's extremely sour and funky. I happen to love it though.
Stuouts: Great Divide Yeti, Old Rasputin, Victory Storm King
German Style Pilsner - Pinkus Ur Pils, Victory Prima Pils.
Czech Style Pilsner: Pilsner Urquell on tap - can't think of much else.

As for the tripel recommendation above, I'm not a huge fan of the Chimay White. I'd rather recommend Westmalle Tripel or St. Bernardus Tripel

Overall though, great list djheater

They have 3 years to call my ass back up ;) But I'll probably be enrolled in ROTC in about 18 months. And yes, I'll be back as an officer.
