Ok if I keep my P3-650, can I run it at 864?

I was going to get a TB1Ghz, but I may not spend all that money. Here is my new idea.

Get a Asus P3V4X (Pro133A, AGP 4X, 2GB PC133 SDRAM, 6 PCI, 1 ISA) and 256MB PC-133 and run the CU650 at 864Mhz.

I have very good airflow in my case, so the temp should be low (~95f).

Is there a better MB for this? What are the odds my 650 will run at this speed?

Thanks.

np, its a ca2 chip, though... YOu may get lucky and be able to hit 866, but it unlikely. You can probably get into the low 800s, though.

So Mike, is there a chip + MB combo that is relativly cheap and say 95% certain for OC'ing? I have a buyer for my CPU, memory and MB, so I don't mind getting all of it.

Hmm... are you looking duron/t-bird or p3? I don't have enough experience with duron's yet to recommend anything.

As far as p3s, you can get pretty much any 650E or 700E cb0 up to about 868 or so. IF you can get a week 20, 26, or 27 700E, they overclock spectacularly. Those weeks sometimes hit over a Gigahertz wtih air cooling.

Scuzz, take it from my Experience. You are going to most definitly have a hard time getting a cA2 650 to 866. I have a cA2 650E Slot1 In my Second rig on my Lan and it does 806 mhz aka 6.5 X 124 mhz PERFECT at 1.65 Default voltage with ram timings at highest PERFECTLY. 866 on the other hand, took some major work, but seems to finally be there.

To get mine working at 866, I had to :

Set my Memory at HCLK-PciClk -> Meaning I have to run my PC133 Sdram at 100 mhz and my FSB at 133. The via 133A can do this. I have a VT6X4 mobo based on the same chipset as the Asus P3VX4 or whatever it is.

Cpu voltage to between 1.75 and 1.85. Now it seems to be doing it at 1.65... hmmm...

Artic Silver Thermal Paste in a thin coat

Vantek P3-D5030 Mongo Heatsink with dual Y's Tech Ball Bearing Fans and Grille cover.

And stability STILL isnt where it should be as far as I can tell.

Let's just say I enjoy my P3 700E cB0 700E @ 994 mhz MUCH better 😛

I have a P3 650 ca2 slot 1 model and it runs 865 with 1,75v and the retail fan on my Abit BE6-2 with no problems at all
Perhaps i got lucky

Good luck with your new system

My friend has a cA2 P3-650 that does 780 with the default intel HSF, and 819MHz unstable. After getting an FOP32 it does 819MHz stable and 845MHz unstable. So, 866 would be quite hard.
