IBM used to have the best hard drives in the industry for years. I'm not sure about the deskstart lines, but I did get one from Dell (didn't know what brand I was buying because it was a dell branded deal). I've found that hard drives will crap out and it's not always about the brand name...just some models fail more frequently than others. Keep backups of all your important data at all times. ;)

Tell me about it...
I RMA 5 HDDs in past 1.5 yrs, all of them are the old 75GXP model
good thing, I use them only for my workstation and all my data are save in my server.
otherwise, I'll be super pissed....anyway there is a class action going on.
anyone knows what happen after that?

Man, my karma is all whacked out. I've got two IBM hard drives and they work flawlessly. Whenever something works for the "general public", it never works for me. But when something doesn't work, it'll work for me. Kinda sucks though because everyone is always working out for the "general public"...

6 40 gig 60gxp's and 2 20gig 60gxp's. NEVER a problem with any of them and they are all over a year old. Two of the 40's have never been turned off.

Just a fyi :p

I've got 2 GXPs in my system right now, they're 3 years old, and still RAIDing like champs - I got in on them before the line started going to crap I guess.

I have a 75gxp thats worked for over 2 years. There were actually 2 factories that made these hard drives. Some people believe that most of the bad HDs have come from only one of these factories.

Agreed.

Man, I have been bitten by the IBM suckage lately too. We have had three of them die at work. Ugh.

No worry, the Seagate 15K.3 SCSI harddrives will be out in November. Faster than current 15,000 RPM SCSI drives and quieter than your 7200 RPM IDE!:)

man this sucks..my hard drive is completely dead now..when i turn on my comp, bios wont even find my hard drive...is there anyway to get the data off this hdd without going to a data recovery palce??

like i heard that u can put your hard drive in a freezer and then take it out and it'll last you a bit to copy all your old files over?

is that true? if so, how long do u leave it i nthe freezer for, and how long does it usually last after that?
