The "guy at the local computer store" is way closer to what your father-in-law needs.

You do NOT need a Socket 939 A64 for Excel and Money.

Either go to the local store and get a price estimate then report back, or go look in Hot Deals for a 400SC deal.

Edit - Oh, and your pairing of an MX4000 with an A64 makes Baby Jesus CRY.

a cpa with 2000+ coustomers would have
a little trouble using excel and money
but boy if he could that would save him about
6000.00 worth of software

i am sorry if i bothered you oo great computer
god with my lack of knowledge

That's too much computer for his need and not that quiet. Do as M4H suggest and get Dell 400SC and customize it yourself. It'll be lot cheaper and plenty sufficient for his need. It's also very quiet and that's something I'm sure he'll appreciate.

If he NEEDS his data, cut back on the CPU speed and spend the extra $$ for...
* Another HD to run a RAID 1 array,
* A copy of GoBack 3 @ $23.50 - SystemWorks 2003 Pro has GoBack 3. The plain version 3 on SW 2003 is just not as feature rich as the "Deluxe" version. But it will be perfectly fine for system roll backs.

* The RAID 1 array will provide data redundancy to avoid loss in case one drive fails. BTW, Buy each drive from a different vendor to get them from different lots.
* The GoBack 3 will provide him with a way to easily roll the system back to a time when it worked properly. This is important to guard against data corruption.

He does not need a speed demon machine for his CPA work... He needs reliability. 🙂

Yes, I would vote for an Athlon64 2800+, a Radeon 9600, 1 gig memory, 2 200 gig Seagates sata in raid1 in an Antec Sonata case (quiet) with a Thermaltake Silent Boost K8 HSF unit and a NEC 3510 DVD burner (backups are allways good)
Motherboard, ASUS K8V deluve, use the onboard everything. (socket 754)

I know a CPA, and the software that person uses charges a flat fee per client, that way a small time CPA with a few clients wouldn't have the same massive costs as the big boys. Maybe it's just different software?

the dude said his father in law doesnt want to upgrade or replace the system as long as possible, i guess that why he want to go all out with the system now. Go to the Hot Deals forum and score your self a cheap pair of seagate 200GB and may be look in FT/FS for a video card, 9600 ? .

Don't get the Via, get the Nforce 3 250 GB chipsets. I propose the Soltek for $99 for best workstation performance.

i vote this for long lasting, but without the 9600. there are not a lot of 3D office apps so that mx 4000 would be ok

Im tempted to say Nforce2 and a Mobile Barton. Granted its nothing flashy but its cheap, quiet and down the line, can be overclocked to decent levels as the future or his demands dictate.

Ive heard of mobile bartons being underclocked to be fanless, Im guessing that those levels would be a tad too slow for his needs but with a meaty heatsink and a slow + quiet fan, it could be underclocked to keep temperatures reasonable and the noise level acceptable.

To be honest, that kind of set up would keep my gaming needs satisfied for the next 2-3 years with only upgrading the graphics card being necessary. It would be overkill for basic programs.

I remember running Sage Line 50 on University PC's. It ran well on a P4 1.8Ghz with 256mb ram I believe. Not great at loading but definately not slow and thats one of the leading Accounting packages for Small/Medium Business.

i am a moron ??
lets see i looked for some help
you belched out a bunch of ignorant worthless dribble
with no clue what you were talking about
now lets see who the moron is
i asked for help and got some great advice from other guys who actually know somthing

and your advice was based on ignorant assumtions that a cpa would use excel and money
to run a tax accounting bussiness
and did not bother to read that this cpa wants to use the system for as long as possible 10+ years
with no upgrades
this combined with the fact that you perfer dell

i wonder if you are to ignorant to know what a moron is
look up the word moron

i think you will find you said enough in you original response to my asking for help
that every one knows who the moron is
you are your own worst enemy
and you dont even know it

This was so good, I just had to post it. 😀
