OK, I was completely wrong about Vista

This is just an apology to those that saw my "Vista is Crap" thread from about a week ago. I shouldn't let my frustrations mask where my issues are. I complained about stability with Vista when it turns out that I THINK my issue is with the new Striker II Formula board by ASUS. BIOS revisions are flying out of that place, but have mysteriously stopped due to them partying for the Chinese New Year 😉

I think I have temperature issues with the Northbridge chip on my lovely 780i MB. Anywho, once I get that resolved, I'll be trying the Vista beast again, this time with 32-bit I think.

And to Just a Geek, I managed to glean a bit of knowledge from your obvious expertise and championing of Vista. And you were right...I apparently did not read enough before installing a 21st century OS. I have been installing hardware on new computers since the DOS 3.3 days actually (but not again till just recently), I guess I was hopeful that somehow things had improved 😉

If there is a good guide to installing Vista I would love to know of one, especially with bleeding edge hardware that I can't seem to help myself from buying.....

Run Vista Upgrade Advisor or Hardware Assessment tool before installing vista to check if your hardware and software is compatible.

I certainly wouldn't call myself an expert, but we have many people here with great expertise, so if you ever need help, they'll be more than happy to share every last bit of their knowledge with you (and anyone else for that matter.)

I do not know of any special "Installation Guide" for Vista - it installs just like anything else. But obviously there are issues/potential problems to remember, so if you have any questions, you're more than welcome to come back.

Stable hardware comes to mind as a basis for any succesful installation and operation, so just try to find the best settings for your 780i chipset, which is sometimes very difficult to manage. Set as many BIOS values as you can manually, with special attention given to memory voltage, frequency and timings.

I am really glad to see you back, Cykoth.

Too bad the Vista Upgrade Advisor completely skips the basic question of whether a PC's BIOS is compatible with Vista. It's an issue with fairly recent Toshiba laptops with Phoenix BIOS (and, likely, other maker's laptops as well). These pass the Upgrade Advisor exam with flying colors, but Vista won't install because Toshiba used BIOSes that aren't compliant with the most recent version of ACPI (2.0 or higher).
