i want to have dual monitors in win2k

i have an xpert 2000 32 mb (ati) agp vid card and want to get another (ati) 32 mb pci card though i'm not too happy with ati's drivers under win 2k

i need to know if the vid cards i have chosen will work well together in win2k?

also i want to have the monitors working together without having to install special s/w drivers, etc.

i have such bad experiences with bad drivers and s/w conficts that i've hateful of computers

lastly some vid cards in agp slots don't like to have the pci slot next to it used correct? due to irq sharing? under which OS?

thanks for your input

ben

Why would you get another one if you aren't happy with their drivers now? Get a Voodoo4 or 5.

good point
i thought that consistency between the two cards might help with stability
though i was just looking at prices and a dual head 32 mb cost just as much as the single 32 mb one i have
but do dual heads require s/w for it to work right?
i'm guessing that 2 cards, agp and pci, don't require extra s/w for it to work right?

if you're not going to be needing a card with top notch 3D performance but with first class 2D performance then you should consider the matrox G400 or G450 with its dual head capabilities! 🙂

The only software you'd need with a dual-head card is the driver. IMHO, that's your best bet - replace the ATI POS once and for all 🙂

yes the matrox is said to be good but does it require s/w for the dual display to work properly?
i want to avoid installing any special s/w just for that feature
i want to just install the cards and the OS and have things ready to use without major complications
i understand that vid card driver s/w is needed for many cards and i don't mind that but my experience with small s/w applications and s/w drivers is that many don't work too well and they complicate an otherwise stable system

thanks for your input and any further input you have

ok so a matrox dual 400 or 450 is going to work better than the ati card i have now
and it's going better than a agp + pci vid card combo?

Get a G450. It will outperform your Xpert 2000 even in 3D games. It can't be much more expensive than your PCI ATi card, the G450 is quite cheap. And then you just have one video card to deal with instead of 2.

And for the 3rd or 4th time, you just need the video cards drivers to get dual head. It's a feature of the drivers. There is no other software you need. You need drivers for anything. These particular drivers support Dual head.

well i did order a vid card but it wasn't the 450

the 450's i found were ddr and the mobo and mem i have aren't ddr

instead i got the voodoo3 16mb pci good enough for a secondary monitor

now i just need to get a 19 inch or more monitor as a main monitor

The onboard ram of the video card as NOTHING to do with the type of ram your motherboard uses, you can put a ddr video card in ANY board that has a AGP slot.

i didn't know that
thanks for the correction
i feel like an idiot now
though the voodoo was cheap and since i paid good money for the ati card i would still like to use it
