I'm playing World of Warcraft on my new build (it's been running great for about 3 weeks) But then the game freezes; I try to close the program nothing happens; I try to get the task manger up and it just freezes. So I restart the system and it says windows won't boot. I tried to boot it normally but it just gives me a black screen. So I put in the the Vista disk in hoping to repair but it gives me a blue screen saying Windows won't boot to prevent hurting my hardware. It also gives this:

IRQL_NOT_OLESS_OR_EQUAL

Registry file failure
Reg cannot laod the hive(file)
/systemroot/system32/config/software
or its log or alternate
It is corrupt, absent or not writable

So I can't re-install Vista; I tried to boot it in safe mode but it too gives me a blue screen.

What's going on? Or better yet how do I go about repairing Windows?

Is there an error code number such as:
Stop: 0xc0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\CorruptHive or its log or alternate. It is corrupt, absent, or not writable.

Yes this was there; I got the Vista disk to repair my system and now Vista will boot. What can I do to ensure this won't happen again? What is a good Registry Repair tool?

So you are saying you had the 'Stop:0x0000218' code yes?

Either way run memtest from boot to check whether there are any errors with the OCZ DDR2. But I still need to you to re-confirm the question above please.

Yes I do

EDIT: Also where can I get memtest? I'm slightly noob on memory issues.

Need to try and find a cause. Typically it can be a memory error causing a corruption of the registry. A power failure or similar type of shutdown. A Vista shutdown error. Or a fault in the mobo itself or processor.

OK, so you got that exact error code and your running Vista Ultimate. Not sure if it matters but is the OS x64 or x32?

x32

What utilities can I run to figure out what's going on?

Since you have your rig up and running there is a chance that it was a random crash and that it corrupted the registry due to an improper shutdown. However I do advise you to do these things anyhow:

1. Make sure that system event logs do not contain event ID 9, event ID 11, or event ID 15 (or any combination of these events). These events may indicate hardware problems that must be addressed.
2. Run the chkdsk command-line command together with the /r switch on the disk that contains the OS and registry.
3. Update all chipset, mobo and soundcard drivers. In fact dirvers for any hardware that you have.
4. Update to the latest BIOS

If the problem returns then return to this topic. There are so many reasons it could be. If the problem has gone for now then there is no need to go through many hours of work unless it returns.

Just one last thing. Check that all system, GFX and CPU fans are operational and that corruption was not caused by an heat problem. Check that all temps are ok in mobo, CPU, GFX, DDR2 when under full load (Quad cores 100% load too)

Memtest86+
You must install it on a CD or floppy. Once installed on the floppy/CD restart your computer and let memtest boot instead of Vista. Start the test and leave it running overnight to check for any errors with your memory.
