I need to purchase a new comforter, and I was thinking I might as well buy a sheet set to go along with it.

what is the difference in comforters? some are $100+, others are sub $100....

I know thread count matters with sheets, but what thread count is ok? I dont want to buy sheets that feel like sandpaper.

any help is appreciated

i think egyptian cotton and like 300 tread count is the best, just softer.
why dont you get some of those jersey sheets that feel like a worn-in soft tee shirt?! i think those are the best, and can be found for fairly cheap. or flannel sheets are good for the cooler months too.
i dunno. i am too poor to worry about thread count. whatever is on sale!

I always buy 250+ thread count sheets. Everything else feels cheap, and tends to wear out too quickly.

Comforters come filled with different products, which makes the price difference. I love my down comforter in the winter, but in the summer a simple fiber filled comforter is fine.

well, just head to some place like bed, bath and beyond and see what there is. if you can, go with the higher thread count. there is a big difference. also, i think if its better quality, it wont "pill" either

With comforters, quite often you are talking about high profit items - making price a bad basis for quality. A department store may take a $50 comforter and sell it for $200. The same comforter at a discount store can cost you far less - or even a sale at the department store will cost you far less. Thus to me there isn't much difference based on price for comforters. Just get one that feels nice, looks nice, and will provide the amount of protection from cold that you want.

A general rule of thumb is that you want at least 200 thread count for sheets. Below 200 thread count they feel like sandpaper and form those little balls of fluff. Personally I think the ideal is right around 300. Hotels frequenly use 600 thread count and it feels like someone used way too much starch - but actually that is just the feel of 600 thread count. Thread counts go as high as 1200 but I've never felt one of those sheets.

You also should consider the type of material that made the sheets. A blend of 30% silk, 70% high quality cotton feels the best to me (but you pay a lot for that). 100% Egyptian cotton feels almost as nice. Then you go down the line to blends of regular cotton and Egyptian cotton. And at the bottom of my list is just 100% regular cotton. Oh I forgot Sateen which is the very worst to me (I have some rough dry skin patches and the material sticks and snags on my hands and elbows). But really just go to a linen store and feel them for yourself. That would be more productive than asking other people for their opinion.
