When I run, my pulse ranges 170-185. This is 90% of my max heart rate, and this is while I'm running 3 miles, at the same pace, around the track or on the treadmill. So you're saying I could run three miles a day at this heart rate and not lose as much weight as if i speed walked on the treadmill for less mileage, the same amount of time, at 150-160 pulse?

I see these stories all the time of runners getting in incredible shape for running three-four miles per day....

Do you do any weight training?

And how tall are you? I'm 6'3" and weighed the same as you when I started seriously hitting the gym in January, down to 207 through strength training combined with light cardio (much lighter than your 3 miles a day)

I'm 5' 8". I don't really do any strength training, no. Just running. I WAS 255, now I'm down to 220 :) All that in four months. My problem is I've leveled off now. Which is why I picked up the pace on the cardio. I used to just do the 28 minute program on the eliptical machine. Now, I'm running three freaking miles on the track :) (I switch between the track and the machine depending on how cold/hot it is outside).

My main question is, by running three miles a day, will I accomplish anything?

The majority of weight loss happens through proper diet and a good workout plan. Are you simply looking to get to 210 without any concern about body fat %? If you drop that kind of weight without working out it's just going to make it even more difficult to keep the weight off this time around because you will have less muscle. The best way to 'lean' is to lift weights, do cardio, and follow a strict written diet.

How about instead of running three miles you build some muscle (greater metabolism) then do 20-30 minutes of whatever cardio, and eat around 2200 calories a day.

The biggest misconception about weight loss is that just running and losing weight is the answer. Hell, people who look at fitness through weight don't even understand the concept of what is going on with their bodies anyway. The only measure that should matter to you is your body fat %.

how our body utilizes the stored fat is not just simple as algebraic expressions of calories and measuring the time on the treadmill or miles you ran.
the best advice i can give you is to avoid carbs 2hours before cardio and carb up moderately after cardio.. avoid simple carbs and sugars at all cost..
eat plenty of fat and protein.. avoid trans saturated fat... you need to eat healthy fat to burn fat... and eat only complex carbs..
Getting in shape is 20% excercise and 80% diet..

Incredibly naiive... Look, stick to the eliptical, doing it every day and the weight will come off, the more you think about it and the more you become impatient about it, the more you'll want to give up and less results you'll notice.

maybe you are using different muscles? for eliptical you are probably using non-aerobic muscles while for running you use "endurance" muscles which take energy from sugars/etc. Besides it's probably harder to gain "endurance" muscle mass than "power" muscles *lol i'm sure those are wrong terms but im not far off :p*

I wouldn't dream of going to the gym unless I eat 4 oz of pasta first.....I tried to go without carbs before hand, doesn't work for me.

Also, YOU DO NOT HAVE TO RUN to do cardio. Why not power walk? If you are going to jog under 6mph, you are going to injure yourself. I powerwalk @ 5.0 - 5.5 mph myself. Sure it looks goofy, but who cares? Let the idiot next to you put undue pressure on his joints....

well.. timing and dosage of carb ingestions will vary depending on your goals and life style.. the reason why i recommended to avoid carbs pre workout is because it's optimal for rapid fat loss. When our body is deprived of carbs during workout, our body switches to fat oxidation over glucose oxidation. Of course, this also depends on presence of oxygen aka "anaerobic vs. aerobic." But wat we are aiming for (in case of people who wants to lose fat) is to burn more fat during our workout and less glucose from stored glygogen. Consuming carbs right before excercise can lead to glucose oxidation for energy and delayed use of stored fat for energy.
