The title says it all. I ant to try something new, and sonething that can use the HP that I bought. I won't use it all, so where would be the best project to spend my CPU cycles on ?????

Anandtech is slowly creeping up the stats in Lifemapper. With a little more power like this we can take #1. Service install is a breeze.

And how do you configure folding@home for smp ? (If its in the faq somewhere I will read more and try to find it) That sounds very beneficial to society. Thats what I am looking for since I blew $4,000. I don't want it to just be a toy.

I know it's possible, but I don't know how exactly. I'm pretty sure you have to make 2 directory's and run the cli client with a flag set in the command.

Someone who's using a dualie here will be able to explain it better, but if you visit the F@H home page I imagine they have more info on how to do it there.

this site for tweaking F@H has a section on setting up a dual rig that seems intuitive (but seems to be lacking a method for letting it turn on at startup). just make sure you use team number 198 when you set it up.

Hi Markfw900,

Welcome to TeAm Folding@Home!

Just run two console clients from separate folders. Windows will handle the rest. Or a service setup is pretty easy too. That way the console window buttons are not showing in the taskbar.

The client runs as an idle process and gives cycles up to you quickly when you need them. I can't tell when they are running, not like a different project I tried.

The faq you need is in lobadobadingdongs or my sig. If you have any questions, there are people who know the answers here.

You'll climb the ranks fast with that rig :)
Just like Pokey is doing now!

If your going to run Linux on it, run FaD... www.find-a-drug.org

I have 6 dual opts running it like a scalded dog. I've made it to first place on our team in just 30 days and 68 over all in FaD. You can move up fast with this project, and our team could sure use the help.

Thanks

Well, If I want to heat the house I have 3 other 3 ghz level systems I could run as well as this new one (which isn;t running yet). What do you think : 2 XP3200 systems, one Athlon64 3000+ at 2.1 ghz, and dual Opteron 248's ? Would they make a dent ?

Absolutly... You and KMoney would be fighting it out weekly for 2nd highest producer. Infact you would beat me on weeks I dont have access to the cluster.

I run FaD on my Opteron dually, and once you run the setup, it automatically configures the client to run 2 instances. There's no need to run two separate clients from separate folders and such. It's a very easy program to run, and almost worry free. It'll even start up automatically every time you boot into Windows.

My 2 cents.

To run F@H in SMP, you make two separate folders as said above. Each instance needs to be set up with a different machine ID (set it under advanced preferences the first time you run each CLI). Each of the CLIs should always be run with the -local flag to keep it from interfering with the other one. The only way I know to run them as a service is with the professional version of FireDaemon, which lets you set up more than one service (the free one - well, the legally free one ;) - can only run one program as a service).

My vote would be FaD.

Pentiums/XEONs seem to run SETI much better.

With the correction in the FaD CPU ratings, I would guess that Opterons will get a pretty good boost.

My vote goes for Lifemapper. It's a great project, we're in 6th place, coming from 21 earlier this year amd going strong. The other teams are way infront and with some additional power, we could really be dangerous. With a fast machine, movin up in the ranks is easy...You cache 200 units and a AMD 2600 does a unit in about 12min. So no waiting hours for wu to finish. With a P4 3.2GHz HT CPU, I did about a wu in 15min running 2 instances.

Whatever you choose, happy crunching! ;)

absolutly, we aren't being outpaced by much. 4 or 5 more users with that much firepower would get us slowly ascending the ranks again.

Can someone tell me the double run config for F@H ? I might have figured it out, but now it looks like I am crunching the same unit on both cpus !!

Hi!
The WUs have a protein number, like p638, and a Run_xx, Clone_xx, Gen_xx, number. If both WUs have the same run, clone, gen numbers then you do need to make sure that you have started the client with the -local switch and make sure that each client has a unique MachineID.

I make a shortcut to FAH4Console.exe and in the Target box of the properties dialog for that shortcut I add the switches I want. After the quote mark add a space, a dash (-), and then the word local. This is what mine looks like: -local -verbosity 9 -forceasm -advmethods

verbosity 9 makes reading the FaHlog.txt file easier, forceasm forces the client to keep using advanced code if the computer crashes, advmethods doesn't do much good anymore but I still try it sometimes.

To make sure that each client has a unique MachineID look at FaHlog.txt files from each folder that contains FAH4Console.exe. Near the beginning there will be a line with MachineID. The number can be any number 1 through 8. So you could run F@H on an eight proc rig!

I hope this helps you, if not post back.

Edit: Just saw your other post. I would delete everything from one of the folders (after stopping clients). Download another console and make sure to change MachineID to 2, during the configuration. The first one should be the default 1. And use a shortcut with the -local switch as in above.

It's exciting watching your fast climb up the ranks :)
