ok i hate story problems

I've always hated math and it's been 15+ years since I've had to do any type of story problems. Coworker asked me the answer to this problem and I have no idea. I have the answer, but don't know the equation for it.

Bob starts with a block of ice weighing 20lbs. It melts to half its weight every 15 minutes. How much ice will be left at the end of 1.25 hours.

What is the equation for this?

Well the original wt is halved every 15 minutes, or 0.25 hours for 1.25 hours, so it is halved 5 times. Don't use Injury's equation.

20 lbs * (1/2)^(1.25/.25) = your answer.

Just write out the equation that the words say. Story problems are not one bit more difficult than the equations alone. One apple plus two apples equals three apples. That isn't any more difficult than 1 + 2 = 3.

I've been working for the last 3.5 years after grad school. I haven't had a need to do math for even longer before that. My coworker's aunt is going back to school and this is one of the problems that she encountered in her work. He asked me for help and I had no idea.

easy for you to say. 😛 I always hated word problems in highschool and my fresh year in college. After that I took no more math classes 😀
