Just spent the last 2 hours trying to upgrade Apache on one of our servers and constantly had it bombing out at 90% on the build. It takes at least 10 minutes to do a build on Apache with all the mod packages we have to install like Mod_PHP and tons of others. Well it would get to about 90% and die with error code 1. Oh yeah, that's real informative. So I would try something to fix this, restart make and then go do something else then check back on it every 10 minutes. Well, as things would have it, I was about ready to throw in the towel when one of my junior staff comes over to ask me a question. He looks at what I'm seeing and says "What's wrong?" "It won't compile. It keeps dying but not telling me why it's failing." He then asks "Did you do a rehash." *blink* "Uh, no." I said feeling like an idiot. So I typed it and got the error that rehash couldn't be found. Then he says "What shell you using?" "Bash." "Try TCSH." So I did. I then typed Rehash and it worked. I then went to compile and believe it or not, it actually completed.
Yes, chalk me up for the rank of "idiot++" today. Sheesh. Here I am supposed to be the tech manager and I went and did something I'd expect out of a unix newbie. Sheesh. Way to make a good impression on the subordinates.
