ok...how the heck do I get this stupid recycle bin off my desktop?

I never have any icons on my desktop. The recycle bin has been the sole survivor for about 3 years now.

I usually have a few programs that I actually use in my quicklaunch bar. Other than that I can click on start if I want to fire up a program.
 
aw, all the good replies are gone.
i went with the arrange icons method a while ago, much easier
