Downloaded ffdshow to have video playback and DScaler 5 to have DVD playback, but I don't like the menu and the control on DScaler, what else can I get for DVD playback? I try Window Media Player on my win 2000 pro, and it doesn't work on DVD. I have no clue why.

I typed the wrong thing. I meant to say the Window Media classic didn't work for me. I dunno why.

Win 2000 Pro
Window Media player 9.0
Downloaded Window media classic...and no work :(

Ok, I think my problem is that my windows media player doesn't use the codec from media player classic or VLC. I want to use WMP to play the DVD since it's the most comprehensive player on my laptop.

i really like media player classic/ffdshow best...and all the latest codecs..like Xvid, x264 etc.

VERY good players also are "the core media player"..VLC is also very nice and mplayer (and the various GUIs for it, eg. MPui)
http://mpui.sourceforge.net/

PowerDVD and WinDVD...nice...but somehow unneeded if the other stuff works

Well, I would really like media player classic/ffdshow if it WORKS on my system :(
It just seems like no matter which codecs or player I download, the window media player just doesn't know how to take advantage of it.

"failed to query the needed interfaces for dvd playback"

that's the message Media Player classic gives me. Any idea how I can solve the problem?

wait. i think there was some miscommunication here. mpc and vlc are both standalone players that should be able to play the dvd without the need of anything else. If you downloaded mpc or vlc and then hoping wmp would play it, that is incorrect.

have you tried playing the dvd by just opening mpc, then to going to File->Open DVD?

I was just hoping the windows media player would be smart enough to use whatever codec comes with media player classic or vlc. But anyway, I couldn't get MPC to play DVD until I installed directshow 9.0. Does anyone know why I need directshow for MPC to play dvd? I would like to keep my laptop as slim as possible.

You can play DVD through WMP easily. You just need a codec that MS produced ages ago. The file is called "dvdpack" and is an MSI file if I recall correctly. :) Its about 390KB in size.

[edit]

In fact I have the file. PM me if you want it...

Impossible because AFAIK VLC and MPC just have all of their media support built in, there's no shared libraries or system-wide codecs installed with them.

Unless he has licenses for MPEG2, CSS and whatever else is requird for DVD playback that's illegal. Even the VLC FAQ tells you that you need to purchase a license on your own to legally use their software.

As far as I know it was the original FREE codec MS released quite a few years ago. It's just impossible to find nowadays.

[edit]

I'll look into your comments as I don't condone this sort of thing to be honest. It was offered in good faith. :)

I don't think it's possible for MS to offer a free MPEG2 decoder because they would have to foot the bill for all of the people using it and that would still require some sort of registration for them to keep track of how many they have to pay for.

Makes sense, but how does that work with WMP6.4 which plays DVD's out of the box as it were?

[edit]

WMP 6.4 does not play DVD's out the box, it still needs a decoder. However, Media Player Classic and VLC do. Not sure what's going on with the OP's system.

START, RUN, MPLAYER2.EXE. It plays the video after you choose all open and browse to the vts_01, choose all files, but then you have to open each chapter separately. And the movie I tried was in French, WTF
