As already stated in many other posts I've linked a win2k machine and a win98se machine with a crossover cable. The 56k modem is in the win2k machine. Now I've checked the internet connectiopn sharing box. So what do I have to do on the win98se machine to access the net? Just opening up IE doesn't do it, am I being stupid?

cheers guys (and girls)

OK I'm getting there. Realised I have to install ICS on the client computer... (d'oh)

But when I try tot ick the box for ICS in add/remove windows components on the 98se machine I get this messgae:

"Your network connection is not complete. Please install your network hardware before installing Internet Connection Sharing"

Now I know that the network is working fine. We're sharing files, printers and playing Red Alert 2 all the time!

What gives?

BTW I have installed TCP/IP, IPX and NetBEUI on both computers.

You don't need netbeui

You need to assign IP's for both puters, the w2k would be 192.168.0.1 and the other 192.168.0.2 and submask 255.255.255.0

You need to enable ms file and print sharing
You need to make the other person a user on the w2k machine
You need to go to sysopt.com and read up on this, or email me, and I'll write out a long and detailed explaination... I would now, but brain is saying "putz it's almost 3am and now you're talking networking?"

Yeah sorry, in the Uk here so it's 11am, not 3am :p. Like you I was up at 4am last night though., so you're not the only one that'll feel shitty on the 5th of May :D

Anyway, nothing worked until I put netbeui on so I'm goin to leave that, unless you think it's causing ICS problems? I've heard conflicting advice on which omputer ICS should be on, some saying the software needs to be installed on the server, and some on the client. I've outlined the eroor I get if I try to install it on the client (win 98se) and I can't find anywhere to install it on the server (win 2k pro)!

Your IP address on the win2k machine should look like this...

http://www.geocities.com/mixxxen/ip.gif

On the client computer, you will have

IP address as 192.168.0.2
Subnet 255.255.255.0
Primary DNS server 192.168.0.1

Your win2k machine should have ICS enabled on the 56k modem only. That's it, don't enable any ICS on your NIC cards or everything will get screwed up.

So all I have to do is select "Enable Internet Connection Sharing" and "Enable Dial On Command" in my dial up settings?

Right, that's what I thought. I don't think my computer should be the primary DNS server, but I'll give it a go. I should have the gateway set to 192.168.0.1 as well right?

Woohoo - it's working! Trick was to uninstall zonealarm. Shutting it down wasn't enough, actually had to uninstall that shit!
