Ok I've got my newegg cart loaded up with 3 new pieces of gear....tell me what you think....
Foxconn 790GX mobo
Phenom 9850 Black Edition
CoolerMaster case

I'll take my memory (G.Skill 2Gb), graphics card, powersupply (Fortron 450) out of my current rig.

I've also thought about a tri core for now to see if that does anything. I'm currently running a Asus-M2A-VM mobo with a dual core... Suggestions would be appreciated. I don't really game, more of a "multimedia" user. Movies, TV, music, etc.

Let me be the first to get it out of the way cause many other will say it. Not that i care either way. but here oges.... Why don't you go with Intel?

Look if the price is right i'd go ATI in a hart beat. Heck i'm still running socket 939 with an Opti right now. Anyway...

Overall it looks good but you havn't mentioned what video card you have. I'm surprised your going with a nice upgrade like that and sticking with an older PSU. If you plan to do any OCing you'll need a better PSU.

He may need a better PSU anyway... aging + higher load(quad core) usually doesn't end well. Also I looks like he is using onboard video.

He mentions a "graphics card" that he is pulling from his other rig. But yes the new system will ad a much larger strain on the PSU reguardless. Considering the PSU i'd say the old card isn't all that recent or is a pretty low end card. But there is a good chance the onboard video is better.

Oh sorry about that. My current graphics card is a 7300GT. One of those 4670's look good too though.

Sorry to say but its kind of sad to have those nice components limited buy a crappy video card. I have a 7300GT sitting on my 3800 X2 system. You really need to upgrade that video card while your at it. Which means you deffinetly need to upgrade that PSU.

Oh and my x2 7300GT system was being ran by the same PSU as you have. Untill i moved it to an Antec 900 case. Cables wouldn't reach so i had to dig out my old Hiper Type-R PSU. Now thats a crappy PSU.

The old video card should be fine, and once you have your new build up and running you can assess whether you need a gpu upgrade. You are looking at the right sort of card if you do buy new (low power with modern multimedia features).

Yeah, it was.

But at like $100 more.

Hmmmm, well I've chickened out - for now. I changed the case I bought - Directron had the Sonata III w/500W Earthwatts powersupply on sale, so i picked that up. Thursday (payday) I may go ahead and get the other components.

When you say movies and TV, are you just watching, or editing and encoding?

Quad core could either be a complete waste or a big time saver.

Mainly watching, but recording as well. I want a rig that can handle recording HD content when the HD tuners come out. The other thing is I often have alot of apps running at one time. We'll see....I got a couple of days to think about it....

"A lot of apps running at one time" = waste of a quad core, unless by that you mean you're actually compiling a 3D-render while ripping a DVD and doing some video editing. Dual-core is more than enough for having your downloads, media player and internet browsers open while doing something.
