The "OK" hand gesture, a mass killer's bowl-style haircut and an anthropomorphic moon wearing sunglasses are among 36 new entries in a Jewish civil rights group's online database of hate symbols used by white supremacists and other far-right extremists.

The Anti-Defamation League has added the symbols to its online "Hate on Display" database , which already includes burning crosses, Ku Klux Klan robes, the swastika and many other of the most notorious and overt symbols of racism and anti-Semitism.


What a time to be alive. I knew people were throwing fits about the ok symbol, didn’t know about the moon or a bowl cut. 90s UC must have been a Jnco and Airwalks wearing hate filling white Supremacist. 😀 And what’s the deal with the moon? I haven’t seen anything about that.

Oren Segal, director of the ADL's Center on Extremism, said context is key to interpreting whether an "OK" symbol is hateful or harmless. He said the ADL had been reluctant to add it to the database "because 'OK' has meant just 'OK' for so long."
"At this point, there is enough of a volume of use for hateful purposes that we felt it was important to add," Segal said.

And? This doesn't mean you can never use the "OK" gesture again, but you should be aware of the context first. Besides, racist communities have lately had a habit of co-opting previously innocent iconography for their own ends (like Pepe the frog). You can't pretend they aren't doing it simply because you want to keep using a gesture or cartoon.

Kind of like how hitler killed the hitler mustache. Isn’t too difficult to understand if you are going to sport one of them nobody will stop you but understand assumptions will be made by #bothsides!
 
This warrants much concern. Trump leaning on a foreign country to investigate his political opponents warrants mild concern. Trump lying to the American people thousands of times per year warrants no concern.
 
As with all things psychological, whatever the need is to manifest, inwardly, there is doubt that it exists. White Power is proclaimed as truth by those who feel that being white makes one actually inferior. There is the need to be better than somebody else only when there is a feeling of inferiority motivating that need. The emotionally mature and self actualized don't make such claims because what they love about themselves they see in all others.

The mental illness that infects humanity is self hate.

Nice to see UC's contribution to tackling neo-nazi extremism is to trawl for random things from those who actually do the work and then attempt to subtly defend the Nazis by misreprenting those things- on the basis of no experience or expertise whatsoever of the effects of racism.

not to mention the swastika, before the nazis commendered it meant something completely different. now it is a symbol of hate
